What do I need to retrieve my data from my SSD

Hi,

I’d really appreciate your help.

Does anyone know what I need to retrieve this data from my 2016 MacBook Pro SSD? It’s from jan 2016 so is a late 2015 one I think.

Thank you very much

Hi, thanks for the help.

It’s just the flash drive that I took from my laptop. Just un-screwed one screw and took it out.  I was hoping to do a DIY job to save a bit of money and put it toward a new laptop. This is the laptop spec

s goth machine currently running and can you access the drive or do you need to pull the drive?

Hi, thank you for your reply. I still have the laptop but it just won’t turn on as it’s broken too badly to repair from water damage unfortunately

Hi,

thank you very much for your reply and I can see why you are so highly rated!

I’m from England for the help wouldn’t work, but I do appreciate it.

I was hoping this would work? https://www.amazon.com/QNINE-Enclosure-M...

Is the photo you posted your actual stick or what you believe is in it? You can also get me that exact machine make by inserting your serial number here:

I do know of a place in the UK that might be able to do this for you but I don't want to say more until I know what you have.

Thanks for the help guys! Tbh I’m not sure if it even works. I took it out before I sent my laptop away as I thought it would be quicker to recover the data myself, and didn’t realise it would be hard. The guy they looked at my laptop said this “Just to let you know that I won't be able to repair your MacBook for you. This is due to there being a hole on the circuit board which is causing a short to ground on one of the main power rails. I've tried to clean the area and remove this short but as it's happened near to the CPU I would image that this has also been effected.” Probably easier to bite the bullet and get a new one. It’s a great community you have here, with lots of nice people! Thanks

Here’s a external case which you can place the SSD into to then plug into your new system via USB-A cable connection OWC Envoy Pro Portable, Bus-Powered USB 3.0 EnclosureFor Apple Flash SSDs (June 2013-Current Mac Models). I can’t speak if the QNINE USB 3.0 PCIe SSD Enclosure will work or not. It does appear by its description to work.

So, what I use is get yourself a 16 gig USB and install Linux Ubuntu and run it on the USB as a trial version and pull the data, or if push comes to shove put Puppy Linux on your USB and pull the data manually while running your SSD through an external, or just get an external and pull your data through your new computer. You can get a external housing relatively cheap now a days.

Hi Sam Gray, thanks for your comment.

I’m a bit simple when it comes to computers. To use the USB option and Linux Ubuntu would the computer still have to work? As please excuse me but I don’t really understand that. The laptop is broken so I’m guessing my only option is the external housing? Might try the product that Dan was kind enough to recommend. It’s the same problem for me that I’m not 100% sure if that’s the right one or not, but worth the risk. Only problem is unless I know it’s 100% the correct one then I won’t know if the hard-drive is broken or not, as it’s taken from a water damaged laptop. Thanks a lot!

Sam Gray - I'm a bit lost here what does Linux have to do with physically holding the SSD? Simon's system is too far gone if I understand things to salvage it.

@pleasehelpmee - Sadly you'll need a MacOS system to read your data with the same apps that the data was created (with some exceptions).
