Screws are almost impossible to remove from logicboard

I'm trying to replace my keyboard as it is dead. After opening the macbook up, i've been able to remove a few screws, but a lot of them just will not budge. I've tried so much that i'm starting to round them off. I've even bought a mini circular saw to try and cut a groove into them, hoping that i'd have something better to grip onto with my screwdrivers. Still no luck!

Has anyone else had problems with this model? Apple continue to make it more and more difficult with each of their releases to take the macbook apart yourself, i'm wondering just what they have done to these screws to make them so impossible to move.

Most likely somebody else before put his hands on the Mac and mixed up firmly with forcibly when putting screws back fearing the logic board would fly away from the topcase. I happened to find the occasional stuck screw on older Macs but I can’t remember a single one on the retinas. Cuttin a slot on the head is what I also do when meeting a stuck screw but that usually happened with philips rather than torx screws. I don’t know if they’re available in your area as I live in EU, but something like CRC or WD40 may help, both are used to release stuck screws although usually because of rust, however worth a try. Just put a drop per screw and let it sit for some time. Remember to clean after, it’s not damaging as such but a bit oily and stinky. Wish you luck!

Hey Alex,

We repair MacBooks at our shop here weekly and here’s a few tips that we’ve used to make the repair process a bit easier.

  1. This is obvious, but we make sure we are using the precise correct size driver.
  2. We had Isopropyl Alcohol (90% or higher) to the area of the screw in very very small amounts, to weaken any possible adhesive in the area. Additionally this can help cause when they solder the board the screws can be hit by the extreme heat. WAIT AT LEAST 30 MINUTES BEFORE TURNING THE LAPTOP BACK ON. Isopropyl alcohol at 90% or higher dries extremely quick, but better safe than sorry.

Do NOT add heat to the screw areas as the motherboards are extremely fragile and we actually did this early on in our repairs and although we had success for a while, eventually we fried one of them.

Hope this helps.

Austin
