Dead MacBook, defect Logic Board and I/O Board?

Hey,

So… One year ago i tried to plug in an external 3,5 harddrive (AC powered) per USB. My macbook crashed, I restarted it and tried it again. It crashed again and stayed dead since than. I asked Apple to repair it, they said the Logic Board and the I/O Board have to be replaced (for 980€) and that they cant guarantee it will work after the replacement. I ddid not accept and took i back home. Now I have the time to look at it myself. It is completely dead.

I tried:

-SMC reset

-vram Reset

-disconnecting the battery and connecting it again

Nothing worked. When I plug in its power cord, it lights green for a few seconds and than switches to orange.

Is there anything I can try, expect replacing these components by myself? Also: Are Apples reports trustworthy? Can i check these parts for defects myself?

edit:

added pictures of the logic board

  1. Edit: added pictures of I/O board and uploaded close ups of logicboard

Lets start off with your external hard drive - You stated its AC powered, I assume you have a AC to DC transformer for it. Lets take a look at the power markings on it and what the HDD is expecting take a picture of both so we can read them, post both here 기존 질문에 이미지 추가하기

As far as your system - Are you able to open the system and we will likely need to take the logic board out. Review this guide MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014 Logic Board Replacement What we need to do is inspect it looking for any damaged components and/or staining or corrosion. If you see anything take a picture or two and post it here for us to see.

From what you stated “I asked Apple to repair it, they said the Logic Board and the I/O Board have to be replaced (for 980€) and that they cant guarantee it will work after the replacement”

I don’t think you went to a real Apple Store or authorized service provider. Someone who is not fully engaged in repairing Apple systems would respond like this.

Can you give us your country and nearest city lets see if we can help guide you to someone with deeper skills and access to the parts.

Hey,

thanks for replying!

Sadly I don’t have the adapter anymore. I destroyed the case, used the harddrive as an internal and threw away the rest. It is however possible that I used a wrong one when I plugged the harddrive into the MacBook back than.

I can’t see any damaged components, but I am not any good at this, so I added Pictures so you can take a look at well.

I don't see any visible damage either its a bit tough as the images are a bit blurry.

Most of the time over voltage condition would damage the power logic or USB ports. Sometimes the PCH gets nailed.

Lets check the I/O board and the I/O board cable to see if that USB port got damaged.

Uploaded pictures of the I/O board, but can you specify what sounds mean with I/O board Cable?

Also tried to make better pictures. Thanks for your help!

Sorry nothing pops visually.

Thanks anyway.

Anything else I can try? Is there a way to check the power logic/usb/pch and replace it?
