MacBook Pro not working without charger

Hi,

My MacBook Pro doesn’t boot without the charger. It even turns off if the charger is disconnected. Coconut battery says cycles completed are 3. But battery status is poor and battery failure says yes.

I tried doing an SMC reset but I don’t know if it’s working as the battery is at full capacity.

When it’s plugged in and I press the battery status button, it blinks 5 times with all lights. When it’s not plugged in, battery indicator doesn’t work.

Even the front light blinks 5 times, then stops, then again blinks 5 times when I boot up the MacBook, again while connected to the 85W charger.

I had replaced the old battery with a new one as it had swollen up.

For reference, I had kept this MacBook unused for over a year with this new battery which was working fine before.

Is this just a bad battery? Or is it my charger? Or worse, my MacBook?

It doesn’t seem like a battery problem because it is brand new.

A few months without charging are enough to kill any battery if it’s under load. There are power lines always on in a PC and little by little they drain all power, then voltage decreases and battery starts chemically deteriorating. The “poor” condition and “battery failure” warning confirm you will have to replace it, no matter how long it was really used. If you plan not to use a battery for long time, it should be charged at 70/80% capacity and then unplugged from device.

Is there any way to make sure that it’s the battery and not the DC converter? Before replacing my battery, the part on top of the MacBook used to heat up so much while charging, that I could barely touch it.

Also, the AC power information says charging as ‘no’ but connected as ‘yes’ . Even the battery is showing 100% still, even after leaving it for 24 hrs.

‘Edit: MacBook doesn’t turn on with 60W power adapter’

Any help is much appreciated

Your DC convertor is shot! Don’t worry its a cheap small part - its the part that the magsafe adheres to when connected. R20$ sees you a new one…. you will need to reset the power controller chip when done -

pres s CMD + OPT + Control and SHIFT (for caps) simultaneously and at the same time press the power ON button…
