Keyboard & Trackpad stop working after login (besides power button)

Hello!

While watching some Netflix on Friday evening, I spilled a whole glass of orange juice on my 2-year-old Macbook Air. I immediately flipped the laptop over, letting the liquid come out. Then I left it like that until this morning. It didn’t turn on.

Since I didn’t want to pay a huge amount of money for the repair in an Apple Store, I went to a small repair shop around the corner. After 6 hours, I picked it up. Everything works besides after I login, the keyboard and the trackpad stop working. But the power button does.

The repair shop told me to come back tomorrow so that they can reinstall the software and charge me 50 quid more.

Now I am wondering, can I fix this myself and how? And could this really be a software problem? Unfortunately, I am a complete noob in technology but good in following steps.

Right now I am using a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Thanks for the help!

Greets,

Gamze

Software can’t repair hardware, it’s quite likely your issue will be still there after reinstall. Heaven knows what has been done to your Mac and what not, but you probably have a damage at keyboard, trackpad, connecting cable…either or all of them. You’re the only one knowing costs and terms of the repair, but it seems your Mac hasn’t been fully repaired, I’d recommend taking it back to the shop asking them to finish the job.

Thanks a lot for the reponse! I will definitely go back and talk to them.

But what do you think why the keyboard works prior the login and afterwards only the power button works? If they havent had fixed that, nothing would work or not?

@gamze Power button together with modifying keys alt/ctrl/option and shift have their own separate circuitry as they serve other system purposes, SMC and PRAM resetting, etc, thus it's not very unusual some keys work after login and others don't when there's a hardware issue. In any case either the Mac is working as it's supposed to, or I would not charge a customer, let alone surcharging.
