I noticed that the display screen looks as if there are spotlights only lighting up parts of the screen. The places in between the 'spotlights' are dark and shadowy if that makes sense. It is not my computer but a family member's computer. Is there any way to fix this?

How about that, a Nvidia GeForce 8600 GPU as I suspected.
There's a Apple recall (repair program) for machines with this processor. They replace the logic board for free and pay for all shipping. It usually takes a total of four days from the time you call them. I've got a customer right now so I'll get back to you, do a search for nvidia on this site
