The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 is known by different models depending on the features. Regular model: SM-T580 (WiFi), SM-T585 (3G,4G/LTE and WiFi) released in May 2016 or S-Pen model: SM-P580 (WiFi), SM-P585 (3G,4G/LTE and WiFi) released in September 2016. It is a 10.1- inch tablet manufactured by Samsung Electronics and their new high-end “A” series.

My microsd port won't lock the card in place.

This is a year old Tab A 10.1 . I inserted 32 GB card about 6 months ago and it worked flawlessly until today when, looking for a book stored on it in ‘my files', it was no longer being recognized by the system. I had just been fooling with Word, which I'm not familiar with, trying to find and open various files in it and just playing around with it in general, my usual familiarization method. After closing it, I went to find the book and nothing. Thinking it probably had something to do with the Word experience, I thought it was probably an easy fix - take the card out and reinsert it. (I should have rebooted first, I know)! Taking it out then led to the very real problem of the card no longer locking in place. I've tried inserting it with every conceivable manner of angle, pressure, and wiggle, short of using a hammer. (Obviously there are limits to what can be done, and I made sure to try not to make things worse). I tried inserting a different card, in case the original had self destructed somehow. It seems like the spring mechanism that does the locking isn't engaging. Just a guess. Maybe I didn't remove the card correctly? I really hope that two uses of the card dock in these things isn't the normal life expectency! And I'm also hoping that if this problem can be resolved, the issue that led me to pull the card in the first place will have disappeared as quickly as it appeared! Any thoughts?

Hi Jon ringo,

As I mentioned in my response to the other answer posted to your question, it sounds like a problem with the eject mechanism of the SD card reader, but I'll have to leave it up to more experienced repairers on this site to explore whether or not your existing reader can be repaired or not.

If it turns out not to be repairable, that leaves you with a couple of options; if you're handy with a soldering iron you can replace the card reader yourself. The part is available; I found one Canadian website that's selling it specifically for your tablet here.

Follow the motherboard replacement guide to pull the motherboard, then I'm afraid you're on your own in desoldering the old part and soldering in the new one.

If the soldering is beyond your comfort level, you can probably take it to an electronics shop and have it repaired; of course that'll cost you quite a bit more than the ~$4 USD the card reader by itself is priced at.

The only other thing I can come up with would be to replace the motherboard; a quick search turned one up on AliExpress for about $40 USD, but I'm sure you can find others on places like eBay or Amazon.

Did you forget to go into device settings and under Memory, YOU MUST FIRST UNMOUNT YOUR SD CARD before ejecting it from the device? The main reasons for this are:

  1. Any data being written to the card can get lost.
  2. Background activities like looking for an older file you know is on the card will work with the card and the device unbeknownst to you. By not unmounting first, you risk not only losing that file BUT ALSO DATA CORRUPTION OF THE ENTIRE CARD due to the unexpected disruption of removing a card while it is in use.

You might be able to take your card (if it wasn't encrypted) and try to mount it onto another machine - PC laptop, card reader - not a phone - and see if you can access any of the data.

If you can recover the data, immediately copy all of it to another device - like a USB stick or flash drive. Reformat the card using the tab a device so you have remounted and then when it is now recognized by the Tab A as a new card - give the card NO Name and then copy the files you saved from the disk before you reformatted it on the tab A and the files should now be back on the card in the device like you wanted them to be.

If you cannot read the data off of the card then consider it lost unless you made a Samsung backup to the whole device before your problem started (good advice going forward).

@ptishberg, I think you've completely missed the point of @jringo's post; that the SD card latch is no longer working and the SD card won't stay in the tablet. This is a hardware problem in the SD card reader eject mechanism and has nothing to do with whether the card was unmounted or not in software.

Thanks Jerry for restating the actual problem. It's still broken, but I got a 'jacket' for the tablet and now can kind of trap the card into place by holding the card, (with the tablets rubber card cover over it), down, and popping the jacket into place. Problem solved!
