MBP 15" 2016 won't boot, won't charge battery

Hi everyone,

MacBook Pro 15-inch, 2016  (A1707  EMC 3072)  --  2,9 GHz Intel Core i7 -- 16Go 2133MHz -- SSD 2To -- OSX Sierra 10.12.6

I have seen issues very similar to mine on various forums but some symptoms differ. And none of the solutions I've read have solved my problem.

So I'll explain in details, sorry if it's a bit long but it will avoid unnecessary questions ;-)

My MBP went to sleep closing the screen with 13% battery. 2 hours later I plugged it in for the night so it would be fully charged the next morning.

Next morning, still plugged in, it did not wake, did not respond. Neither unplugged.

I tried to reset the SMC and then start, no response.

Hold power for 10s, then start, no response.Hold power for 10s, reset the SMC and then start, no response.I have 2 AC adapters, I switched them, no response, I switched the cables and tried both bricks again, no response.

AC adapters stay cold, do not seem to charge at all. I plugged my OnePlus 6 phone to both bricks and it started charging at once on both.

So I unplugged it, plugged it again and left it aside for 30min suspecting a battery pb, then start, no response. Hold power for 10s, reset the SMC and then start, my MBP finally started !!!

But fans rushing and running constantly.I logged in and let OSX load. I noticed that the battery icon had disappeared. And Touch Bar was off ...

1. System Preferences / Energy SaverWhen I tick "Show battery status in menu bar", it unticks automatically and the "Turn off display after" settings changes to other settings.Current battery charge: 0%

If I change the "Turn off display after" setting from the current value to any other value, when I quit System Preferences and come back, OSX has not saved my changes and I'm back to the previous value.But I can change the Brightness in the Display settings, or the Output Volume in the Sound settings, OSX saves these changes when I quit System Preferences.Touch Bar settings in Keyboard just disappeared, the « Customize Control Strip » button is just not here ...In Sound, no Input device & no Output device ...

1. System Information / System report / Hardware / Power

Hardware configuration :UPS installed: no

No battery appears ... I have screenshots just in case.

I started searching forums for a solution and suddenly it died on me. And would not start again.

Hold power for 10s, then start, no response.Hold power for 10s, reset the SMC and then start, it started !!! And died again while loading OSX after I logged in. And would not start.

Again suspecting a battery issue, I left it aside for 1 hour and it would not start. AC adapter still cold. Again hold power for 10s, reset the SMC and for the first time I heard the chime of the MBP charging.It started and loaded just fine.

At once I quit all my apps to save energy and could use my MPB for hours just browsing the forums.

For the first time, it started with no rushing fan and a battery icon in the menu bar, showing 100% and the charging lightning across.

Now I can change & save settings in Energy Saver. The « Show battery status in menu bar » is ticked as before. OSX indicates « Battery is charged ».In Keyboard, the « Customize Control Strip » button is back. And Touch Bar is back on & functional.

Sound Input & output devices are back on & functional.

I restarted my MBP, reset the NVRAM sucessfully and restarted with the same problems again (missing Battery icon, no Touch Bar) and rushing fans.

Left it aside for another hour and went through the same procedure again (hold power for 10s, reset the SMC (no chime) and then start), to start it normally.

Then I restarted it in AHT mode.

1. DIAGNOSTIC

The battery was not detected (Reference code: PPT001)There may be an issue with the System Management Controller (SMC) (Reference code: PFM001)

From the AHT mode, I shut it down and it would not start again. Same procedure again to start it normally.

AC adapter does not get warm, just mildly warm showing it's supplying power to my MBP, but obviously not charging the battery.So I made a simple test, I unplugged the charging cable and it died on me. And would not start again.Again hold power for 10s, reset the SMC (no chime) and then start, it started with rushing fans and same problems (missing Battery icon, no Touch Bar).

Very frustrating given the price of that thing.I decided to leave it aside for another hour.Again hold power for 10s, reset the SMC (a chime this time) and then start, it started perfectly well.

So it seems my MBP needs time to take a minimum battery charge to even succeed in resetting the SMC and start normally.

Also it looks like my battery was completely drained. And can't be charged anymore.

Before this happened I had around 4h of autonomy using lots of power consuming apps like Acrobat, Illustrator, Photoshop + lots of Excel, 7 mailboxes on Thunderbird and 150+ open tabs in Firefox + Dropbox + Sugarsync. Plus a second monitor 25% of the time. Work ...

I don't really suspect the battery, as the Touch Bar also is impacted by this problem.

I just realize the SMC controls the keyboard backlight and since a couple months it happened a dozen time that I could not turn on the keyboard backlight, and there was only one icon in the Touch Bar with a strikethrough. This might be part of the same issue.

Not swollen, looks perfectly fine.I disconnected it (both connectors) and left it disconnected for 30min. Reconnected it and it would not start, nor respond.

I suspect the SMC, which does not seem to really reset. Nor charge my battery ...

Any ideas anyone ???
