My phone has been damaged and iTunes can't see it.

My iPhone lost an argument with my 12-tonne digger today - the glass is shattered and the case is slightly bent. There’s no response on the screen with buttons or touch, and iTunes doesn’t see it. I can replace the phone, but I can’t replace the contents. Apple’s narcissistic security has made it hard to back up (the old “iPhone is locked with a passcode” message), so sadly no backups for months.

My question: could the above symptoms be due solely to a damaged digitiser? I’ve ordered a replacement screen assembly in the hope that this is indeed the case.

Thanks.
