Why are there lines during games, on my wii

When I play on my Wii there are lines through it and the game skips sometimes. Then the screen got really dark. Like when a tv picture tube blows. But when i shut off my Wii the tv is fine

Please respond. My grandmother bought me this Wii when I was 9 (im 17 now) fir christmas she passed a month after she bought it and it was the last thing she ever bought. Please help me.
