My display is unstable a couple of minutes after start up

My display is unstable a couple of minutes after start up, it ‘fuzzes’ out and is unreadable.

I’m thinking it must be the display card/board.

Does that seem reasonable and can I replace the component(s) to get it functioning again?

While I have a 15” MacBook Pro (retina), I really loved the larger display of this laptop.

Assuming I can get it functioning again, I will strip the HD of all unnecessary apps and solely use it for my graphic artist work, using Adobe’s Creative Suite 6. Ought to run fast enough that way.

Depending on the model version you can have one of these GPU’s.

  • Early & Mid 2009 - NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT and GeForce 9400M
  • Mid 2010 - NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M and Intel HD Graphics
  • Early 2011 - AMD Radeon HD 6750M and Intel HD 3000 Graphics
  • Late 2011 - AMD Radeon HD 6770M and Intel HD 3000 Graphics

If you have either of the 2011 models you maybe facing a thermal paste and/or heat pipe failure issue. I would start off servicing your system. Fully removing the logic board cleaning any dust buildup on it, the fans & heat sink. As well as removing the heat sink cleaning off the old paste and refreshing it following this guide: MacBook Pro 17" Unibody Logic Board Replacement.

I would also install a good thermal monitoring software like TG Pro before you start so you can gage what your system is doing before and what it does afterwards.

If you have either the 2009 or Mid 2010 models your GPU is going to hold you back if you are doing any deep images.
