New SSD won't format. Uninitialized

I used a kit from ifixit to install a Samsung 860 EVO SSD as a second drive on my late 2012 mac mini. When i try to erase the disk to format it, it complains “wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed”. The partition button is greyed out and won’t let me attempt it. It says that “uninitialized disks can’t be partitioned”. All the solutions I find online have to do with erasing or partitioning the disk but those options fail for me. What can I do now?

Lets see if you can do it externally using this StarTech 2.5" SATA to USB adapter cable.

If that works you may have damaged the cable or it could be defective.

That helped and I'm one step closer! I did it externally and it allowed me to erase my drive and format it. Could you explain why that is the case?

My next problem is that I can't install the OS after putting the SSD back into my mac mini. It says permission is denied. Will I also have to do this externally?

I'm confused here you took the SSD out and plugged it in via the adapter cable or you used a HD case to do the same. They why did you not just install the OS directly? It makes no difference if the OS is installed when the drive is internal or external the results should be the same.

If you did install the OS externally your system should see it as long as you've told it to boot up under it using the Option key to get to the boot disk manager.

But I think you've jumped too soon! You still have a problem that you haven't addressed. Your cable is damaged! This is a common issue as people bend it up to the point of damaging it. You don't want crisp folds you want nice arcs following a radius. I use a BIC pen ink straw as a brake to bend the ribbon cable at the bend points so as not to over do it.
