Spilled tea on my MacBook, should I replace battery?

So I accidentally spilled tea on my macbook which prompted it to shut down. When I was cleaning the inside for battery stains, I noticed that unusual gel-like substances formed around this particular region.

I think the battery or connector is damaged. I’m able to use my laptop, but it relies completely on a charger now. Initially the inside looked like this:

My macbook had shells and keyboard covers at the time, which probably reduced the damage. Should I replace my battery?

Batteries do not like liquid. Change it out when you clean the board so you know there won’t be any battery problems. It already looks like the BMS is corroded too.

I don't have a battery yet but I'll order one, so in the meantime I guess I'll remove the battery. Could you identify the BMS for me? Is that a separate issue that I should order separate parts to fix?

@djli - The BMS are the chips on the batteries logic board.

@danj I can already tell the electrolysis corrosion started from the photo. Game over in terms of not needing a battery :-(.

@danj Will a battery replacement fix the issue? I backed up the mac and took out the battery, but now it’s unusably slow.

@djli That could also be an SMC issue - hopefully it's an easy fix. Unless you had an EFI lock badly removed, it's not going to be an Intel ME issue. Try the battery first; the damage is done.

Did you use the stock 60W or an 85W adapter (upgrade)? These machines throttle without a battery unless you use the 85W adapter. I keep an Apple 85W on hand because it's nice to have for throttling hardware like this.
