Hi, I’ve been hearing more and more about people upgrading graphics cards In their Imac’s. So they can run Mojave. What I’ve heard Is that you have to have metal support. I’ve seen a few video’s of guy’s upgrading to Nvidia 765, 770 even 880 graphics cards. I think this would be a big seller If you made a kit to do this. I know I would do buy one.

It would be a 27. What I’m saying Is If Ifixit figured It out and then offered it as a full kit. The cards have to be Alienware Laptop cards. I think It would be a hot seller. They offer the stock cards so It’s not that far from doing a little more leg work for a kit with say Nividia 765, which has been successfully done by more then one person. I’ve heard some people have gone as high as a 980 but, It was much more involved. The 745, 780 are very very close In size. Like I stated before that not that much further then doing a stock replacement.

The problem is you need a very specific MXM card to do it due to the need to modify the firmware. The people doing it are using Dell MXM cards and flashing modified firmware on the cards. They usually come out of Precision mobile workstations.
It isn't a cut and dry job - it is involved. You need to make sure it’s flashable with custom GPU firmware (not all are), check if it mounts right in comparison to the old card and it’s a difficult install since the whole iMac needs to be taken apart.

@nick Is this for the 21" or the 27" (which has the known failure issues)?
@mayer The Dell MXM approach is usually done on the 27". They use the Dell card since it's easy to flash with custom firmware to trick the iMac into thinking it's Apple blessed. I'm sure other MXM cards will work, but it's usually referenced with the Dell parts. Practice on a test machine with cheap cards if you want to offer this option to clients if that's why you asked - it can be finicky and if you get it wrong, the EEPROM needs to come off and you need a flash programmer to get the card working.
OP didn't say 21.5 or 27 so I presumed it was the 27".
