SSD upgrate (OS catalina)

hi All,

I time machined the data to my new SSD.

But I am not sure whether I am ready to take apart the Mac and replace the old drive.

I am afraid that the Mac will not boot up with new SSD installed.

Am I ready? (or I need to create a boot USD?)

Thanks for the help. (Lots info online, but looking for more clearer answer)

Do not do your update until, the SSD is installed

What system are you currently running? Did you format the new drive? Have you replaced the hard drive/IR cable?

.It sounds like you did your Time Machine back-up to the new drive without have a system on it.

The backup needs to be to a drive you are not booting from.

Install the drive. Boot from the old drive externally. Format the drive using APFS GUID. Now install your current system onto the new drive. When finished use Migration Assistant to move your data and APPs and user. Make sure the new drive is working correctly. Before taking it to Catalina you may have to incrementally upgrade your system to insure you pick up any firmware updates. So we need to know that current system.

Hi Mr. Mayer,

Thank you for your answer.

I just install the latest Catalina before conducting the Time Machine backup.

From your response...my assumed step by step is:

1. take apart Mac and replace old HD to new SSD

2. Start Mac and boot from old drive externally (hold OPTION key during start)

3. Erase and format new SSD to APFS GUID

3. Use migration assistant to move everything from external old HD to internal new SSD.

Note: when I check the current HD drive, the format called out APFS (encrypted)...hope this will not be an issue during migration.

Again, many thanks.

Best,

Lee

Just use the plain APFS (it is generally the first option). The encryption will slow you down. When you installed Catalina, there is a check box that you have to uncheck when going through the set up process. Looks like you missed unchecking it. To verify, go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > FireVault and see if your drive has been encrypted. I personally do not like the encryption as it causes to many problems. If it is encrypted you may want to decrypt first (this may take a while) before proceeding.
