fridge is only staying at 13c

Good day ,I have a Hotpoint Quadrio about 8 year old ,worked fine but now fridge is only staying at 13c , i’ve checked the fan in the freezer and all working ok ,freezer still working but the cold air doesn’t seem to be circulated back up to fridge enough ,I can feel the cold air circulating in freezer no problem but very faintly into fridge ,also checked for obstructions but nothing ?

Hi @jock011

What is the model number of the fridge?

What is the freezer temperature? Usually freezer temp is -18C

the model number is FF4DX UK

hi @jock011 ,

Don’t know the fridge but looking at the parts the evaporator fan feeds straight up into the refrigerator via the duct section through what is called a sponge?? (see part #36 - click on right side parts diagram) and there is a return airflow vent in the refrigerator. So really not much preventing airflow into the refrigerator.

Have you checked that the refrigerator compartment door seals are OK? Place a sheet of paper between the door and the door jamb and close the door. Try to pull out the paper. It will come out but not easily and should not just fall out. Try this a various locations around the door. Top, bottom and both sides. If the seal is not good in one section, you can try warming it using a hair dryer (cool setting only) and manually shape the seal so that it seals properly.

Just curious, did you measure the freezer temp, you didn’t say? If the freezer is not getting to its’ correct temperature then the refrigerator won’t either

thanks for response, ive taken the cover off in the fridge compartment and found a electric flap right at the top which opens and closes ,removed completely and fridge gets cold again ,(to cold freezing ) is there a way of testing the motor as permanently shut ,also is there a thermostat which regulates the opening and closing of flap on motor ?

Hi @jock011

As the flap was in the closed position, can you put it in the open position and then check if the control board tries to close it?

The parts list doesn't show any sensors but looking at other hotpoint fridges there is mention of the refrigerator temperature "thermistor" being located in the return air duct behind the multiflow unit in the fridge compartment, so yours may be there or behind the return airflow vent perhaps that may be worth a look.

If there is then presumably the thermistor (either a NTC resistor (Negative Temperature Co-efficient - resistance goes up when temp go down or a PTC resistor - Positive Temp Co-efficient resistance goes up when temp goes up) signals the control board to adjust the flap.

There is mention of a thermometer but I think that this may just be the user interface to the control board.

Depending on how many wires are connected to the flap motor you may be able to test if it is working or not.

If there are 4 wires or more it may be a stepper motor for more precise control as to how far the flap opens and closes, with a pair of wires to each winding. Hopefully the motor may have markings as to the voltage requirements. If it only has 2 wires it may just be a case of fully open and fully close. Again look for the specs, if any, on the motor housing.

You can use an Ohmmeter to test the windings for continuity (do this with the power disconnected) or depending on the voltage rating of the motor test for voltage coming from the control board. Be safety aware if it is mains supply voltage!
