Replacement battery - laptop randomly goes to sleep

Hi,

I replaced my laptop battery with an ifixit one. I callibrated it and reset the SMC, as it was blanking/going to sleep really quickly.

That seemed to fix it for a day or two, but now I’m literally plugged in, working, and my laptop randomly went to sleep, just suddently black-screened me.

Anyone know why this is happening? Should I try going back to the previous battery or is there something else I can reset?

Thanks!

Update (07/16/2020)

This is still an issue. Computer actually just shut off entirely while on battery power and I lost an hour’s work.

Quick question; did this symptom occur even before replacing your battery?

Here’s what you can try:

  • Navigate to About This Mac and open System Report.
  • On the left side of the window that appears there will be a scrollable column where you will find a section called Power, click that.
  • This will give you more information about the new battery, take a screenshot of it and post here.

With a new battery, you should expect a very low number of charge cycles and its condition should read “Normal.” If you calibrated it correctly, it should have an accurate reading of “Full charge capacity” too. This is an important follow-up procedure after installing a new battery because it will verify that you received a good unit.

EDIT: I should also mention we are looking at the amperage and voltage of the new battery as well.

All of these units are tested before shipment, so I doubt it is the issue but still a possibility that needs to be ruled out. Once verified, I would check your Energy Saver settings located in System Preferences, as these settings handle the machine’s sleep/wake conditions.

Thanks Cory. I added the screenshots as a comment to my original post. Please let me know what to do next!

Hi @Katherine Wootton - you definitely have a good battery. What I would do next is check "System Preferences>Energy Saver" to make sure your Computer Sleep and Display Sleep settings are configured to your liking. If their thresholds are set too low, you can find your Mac deciding to sleep after as little as one minute of inactivity. From what I can tell in your screenshots, I see a 12 minute inactivity timer set for both Computer and Display Sleep. Try playing with these settings for your desired result. Hope this helps!

Hi, I'm afraid that's not it. I have changed the settings (increased to an hour), but the screen still blanks out/computer goes to sleep when I'm literally in the middle of typing. I'm not sure if there's somewhere else I can adjust settings or if I need to reset anything again? I've tried turning off 'put hard disks to sleep when possible' in case that helps, but I'd really appreciate hearing about other possible causes, since it wasn't doing this on the previous battery.

Katherine - I can help you but I need to see a snapshot of CoconutBattery (its free).

@Katherine Wootton sometimes it can be magnetic items and/or articles getting close to the sleep/wake sensor. This is located on the inside of the device near your headphone jack. If you wear a smart watch and it gets near, I've seen them trigger those sensors before. When it goes to sleep next time, can you close the lid and then reopen it immediately? It should wake back up automatically if that's the case.

Katherine I think you’ll find doing this is a lot easier and will offer a better view.

Hi Dan, sorry it seems weird to me that you're asking me to download an app when I copied and pasted system info for Cory.

Presentation of the info is just important! CoconutBattery offers a much more compact collection of the needed info.

CoconutBattery output is also easier for the person to get as well. Just look at the mass of info you dumped and the work that was needed to get it.

Most of what you collected is useless for the task at hand and we often need additional captures.

If you review the answers you'll see how effective it is! I have no involvement with Coconut-Flavour (the maker of the app). I just like the simplicity and the fact its free for the basic elements needed here and have used it for years. In fact is was @mayer who turned me onto it here years ago!

I'm having the same issue. New battery from iFixit still on first cycle. Running Mojave 10.14.6

I had the same problem and ifixit sent me another one that works. Seems like they are selling quite a few defective batteries. Since then (2y) I had very rare cases where my MacBook randomly shut off but the battery times in general are good.
