Mac Pro 5,1 (Mid 2012) - Boots up but no video output (black screen)

Hi all,

After a restart, my Mac Pro 5,1 boots up without video output, I can access the files and content via a networked computer, so I can confirm booting up is not an issue.

My Mac Pro:

  • Mac Pro 5,1 (Mid 2012)
  • 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
  • 3 x 16GB 1066Mhz DDR3 ECC (total: 48GB)
  • 1 x 1TB SATA SSD / 2 x 1TB SATA HDD / 1 x 4TB SATA HDD
  • Using a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display

I was running on Mojave 10.14.6 with MSI Radeon RX 580 Gaming X 8GB before the error occurred, connect to my 27" Apple LED Cinema Display through HDMI via QGeeM HDMI to Mini DisplayPort adaptor. The system boots up with the chime with a brief red LED flash on CPU tray.

Methods I have tried:

  1. Reset PRAM / NVRAM (4 chimes)
  2. Reset SMC
  3. Replaced PRAM Battery (CR2032)
  4. Connect to Samsung Curved LED Monitor (C27F591FD) via HDMI and DisplayPort
  5. Connect to Apple LED Cinema Display via DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort adaptor
  6. Replace GPU with MSI Radeon RX 580 Armor 8GB OC
  7. Tested both MSI Radeon RX 580 Gaming X 8GB and MSI Radeon RX 580 Armor 8GB OC on my PC - no issues
  8. Tested the Apple LED Cinema Display with my PC via DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort adaptor - no issues

When upgrading to Mojave, I installed the new OS to my 1TB SSD and kept High Sierra 10.13.6 in its original 1TB HD. To make sure my logic board is working, I replaced the GPU with the stock ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB and boot with High Sierra - everything works fine.

The only thing that I have not tested or replace is the power supply (I do not have the equipment to test), this is a gamble I am not willing to make if I do not know the cause of the issue, was told it was a GPU fault by a technician and bought one, yet doesn't solve the problem.

I just had this issue while using the computer- the Screen went dark and nothing on reboot would help. I have been using a SAPPHIRE Radeon 11265-05-20G Pulse RX 580 8GB GDDR5 Dual HDMI/ DVI-D/ Dual DP OC with Backplate (UEFI) PCI-E Graphics Card Graphic Card problem free for a year and a half. I put my old graphics card back in and it booted up with screen just fine. :( not sure what to make of this. It's got to be something related to the new GPU.

@Luciano Gomes I managed to solve the issue. It was something that I did before I restarted the Mac.

I was trying to record my video conference with sound and installed Soundflower. After I removed soundflower.kext via a networked PC, everything ran perfectly.

I am having the same exact issue. How were you able to uninstall soundflower without the screen?

If this is true, your power supply is fine.

This sounds to me like an issue with the patch you used to take it to Mojave. I’d start over on a clean drive, and install your High Sierra then find DosDudes newest patch and go from there.

My MacPro was working just fine with Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB turbo and High Sierra. Everything was working perfect and then ... no video. The computer starts with chime. I can open the DVD compartment after booting, I can hear the “funk” error sound when I punch keys on the keyboard. No video :(

I already replaced the PRAM battery. Thank you

I’ve run into the same type of issue, though I’m on a GTX 740 PC Card. It’s metal capable and boots fine, just no boot screen.

I installed OpenCore on it and all is good, though, still not getting a Boot Selection Screen, going to get a another Card that others have had success with.

To you issue, the current GTX 740 outputs via HDMI. I’m using the same MiniDP Adapter that you are. After monitor sleeps, can’t get the display back on. However, if the computer goes to sleep as well and I wake the computer up, then the monitor will come back on. If I tried to wake when only the monitor has gone to sleep, but the computer has yet to, then the monitor won’t come back on.

Solution for me, aside from adjusting the timing of monitor and computer sleep, unplug the HDMI port and plug it back in… after a minute or so, screen comes back up.

It has something to do with the HDMI output. Have you tried plugging in and unplugging? Also, you might want to try a MiniDP to DP adapter since your Card has a DP port. The DP ports are much more reliable, plus the adapters are a lot cheaper than then MiniDP to HDMI one.

Long story short, it’s something to do with the HDMI port. Use another port. I have a Hackintosh build as well as the MacPro 5,1 and from my experience, HDMI output has issues with MacOS, especially on non-Apple graphics cards.

There are fixes for it in the Hackintosh world, but I haven’t run across one yet that might work on the MacPro. I’ll explore more now that I’ve got OpenCore on the MacPro.

I was running an MSI Radeon 580 wth 8GB. it woul not wake from sleep with wired mouse click or power button. Mouse was pluged in to back of computer USB slot. Like you tried everything. Then on I connected the wired mouse to one of the two USB slots on the front

of the computer and the problem was fixed -wakes up just like it should with moue click. Maybe just a fluke that had nothing to do with

changing slots but worth a try.
