Dropped phone in water and now top of screen is lit up?

Last night I dropped my phone in water but when I took it out, everything seemed to be working fine. I have a large crack diagonally across my phone so I was concerned water would get in, but the screen seemed fine. Even so, I left it to dry facedown overnight (The on/off button doesn’t work anymore so I don’t know how to turn it off completely, but it was in sleep mode.). This morning everything looked fine, so I plugged it in to charge. After charging it I noticed that the top of the screen appears to be lit up. The screen works fine, I can see everything, but it’s brighter at the top. I went out and bought some rice and my phone is now submerged in it (Again, not completely off. I don’t know how to turn it completely off.) I can’t seem to find any answers on what the brightness at the top of the screen is, as water seems to usually blacken the screen completely. Does anyone know? Have I doomed my phone by charging it? What should I do?

Edit: The “brightness” looks like the screen in this picture: https://discussions.apple.com/content/at... . Apparently this is “stage lighting”.

First off, rice just doesnt do anything at all. It gets stuck in the ports, and under and in things. When water gets in a screen, it makes it look a lot brighter. You may need to replace the screen, but while your at it you should replace the power button too.

Hi @fairylights

Water and electronics and electricity are not a good mix.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion start immediately and is ongoing until it has been properly cleaned away.

Rice does not fix the problems caused by corrosion. Rice is for dinner, not repair

First do not try to charge or to turn on your phone and then remove the battery as soon as possible to prevent any further damage.

Then you need to disassemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available from electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. Do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is <70% IPA, can contain additives and is not as effective. If you do have to use it, check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the concentration (%) of IPA the better.

Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the boards. You will also have to remove any shields that may be covering some components as the water may have got in under them as well. Also disconnect any flex cables and clean the ends of the cable as well as the connectors that they were plugged into.

You may also have to replace the display assembly as it may be damaged and cannot be repaired.

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is a link to the ifixit iPhone SE (1st Generation) guides which may be of some help.

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional mobile phone repair service, experienced in water damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair.

If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.
