Are constant 90-105 C spike temperatures normal?

Hi there :)

I’ve bought used MacBook 13 2015 - I’ve opened it up - definitely someone was messing with up inside.

I’ve put new thermal paste right away on CPU and GPU as Apple NEVER puts it on GPU - I’ve even added thermal pat to GPU only as I think there is gap between heatsink and die.

I’ve installed MacFanControl app as always and when I do some simple tasks like opening my iCloud informations in settings temperature on “CPU PECI” in MacFanControl spikes sometimes to 105C - while opening new tab with website in is MINIMUM 90C…… for few seconds then back to average 40C

I know about all CPU temps spikes but not like so massive and for so many seconds.

And I would not complain if I would not own MacBook Air 2014 - with exactly the same thermal paste and same MacFanControl settings where I just have like 60C MAX spikes and for much shorter time.

Partially I would suspect my applying that thermal pad on GPU increasing CPU temp (and increasing GPU speed as no GPU throttling as better cooling) - but still - why no such a temp spikes on MacBook Air - it still have similar Turbo Speeds.

Thank You for help - it would be great to confirm with person who has same model and have same or similar app installed to confirm temp spikes.

Here it is - but different app

Sadly this app doesn't show us the heat pipe exhaust temps (see pic in my answer)

ok - that is weird - I've installed that app and those Exhaust Pipe temps are about 30C - I've set to automatic Fan Control - fan speed dropped to 0 RPM and even under load - with ±100C they increase their temp by 1 or 2C - even when fan 0 RPM

Lets drop the MacsFanControl app and just use the TG Pro. It offers turbo mode which is all you really need. With the full version you can log the temps so over time see what is happening. A few days worth of data should be enough to aim us on what's behind this.

Well I’ve go a bit of news for you the two dies of the Intel Broadwell CPU carrier (5257U, 5287U, 5557U) One is not pasted on purpose!

Lets get a better idea what we have here

As we can see the GPU in part of the bigger chip! The I/O die (the smaller one) doesn’t get any paste as we don’t want the heat from the main die to flood it.

To get proper diagnosis I would need to see a snapshot of all of thermal sensors as well as the fans RPM from TG Pro.

Don’t forget! This series uses the Intel graphics engine no discreet GPU unlike the 15” systems.

Update (08/11/2020)

Besides the CPU temps we need to see the heat output. TG Pro is one of the few that offers the full suite of thermal sensors. I just find it the best monitoring app out there.
