iPhone 7 won't charge after DIY battery replacement

Hi,

Today I’ve replaced battery in a friend’s iPhone 7. The replacement went smoothly, no problems, and I’ve replaced many batteries prior to this one. However, after the replacement, iPhone refuses to charge. Even after connecting the battery, iPhone still doesn’t charge.

What I’ve tried:

  • Using multiple cables and power sources (all of them worked with my iPhone XR but none worked with this iPhone 7)
  • Connecting the old battery
  • Turning the iPhone on by plugging it to power outlet (this worked and the iPhone powered on. Tried multiple times)
  • Putting the iPhone into DFU mode (since this only works when connected to a computer. Worked fine.)

So, based on what I tried, I have no clue what’s going on.

The phone still gets to DFU, powers on by plugging it into outlet but it just refuses to charge. Any ideas what could’ve happened?

Thanks!

Was it charging with the old battery? If it was you have most likely nudged one of the tiny resistors while replacing the battery. You will need to take some measurements on the connector to confirm unless you can check with some decent magnification.

If it wasn’t charging the old battery it would most likely be a faulty charging IC. Either way it will need to be repaired by a reputable repairer unless you have microsoldering skills.
