Why my MacBook 7,1 isn't booting after 16gb RAM update?

Hello :)

I upgraded my macbook 7,1 (MacBook 13.3” Mid-10) with a new SSD. It’s running High Sierra with the EFI 68.0.0.0.0.

I decided to upgrade my RAM with both 8Gb RAMs bought here : MacBook 13" Unibody (A1342 Mid 2010) Memory Maxxer RAM Upgrade Kit

With both the 8Gb RAMs installed, the MacBook is beeping at booting (1 beep every 5 seconds) and nothing is happening (black screen).

However, it’s working with one 8Gb RAM and the original one of 1Gb. Both 8gb RAMs are working separately when paired with the original 1Gb RAM. And the Mac is working and it’s says 9 Gb of RAM installed.

I don’t know what to do to solve this problem… since I want to have the 16gb RAM on my MacBook. I read everywhere that it’s working on this model.

This other member had the same problem here but it didn’t help : Adding RAM, only boots if one old RAM is in a slot with one new RAM

Thank you in advance !

Oscar

Hello i have the exact same problem with exact same computer, are you saying that you bought another full set of ram? 8gb x2? do you think if i used the one 8bg that i have already and buy 1 new 8gb stick it will work for the full 16gb? i can get 9gb but not 16gb.

Which model do you have?

Sadly the 2.26 GHz models PCH can only support 8 GB as the max, whereas the 2.4 GHz  models PCH can support 16 GB of RAM.

Hi! I have the 13” MacBook 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo (Mid-2010).

@oscartol - I'm wondering if Apple altered something in the newer release of firmware preventing it. I've setup quite a few systems years ago when it was discovered it was possible!

Here's the EveryMac note on RAM:

"Apple officially supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM, but third-parties have determined that it actually supports 8 GB of RAM running Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" and 16 GB of RAM running OS X 10.7.5 "Lion" or higher and the latest EFI update."

Are you able to install one SO-DIMM and have the system recognize it? Try the other socket as well and the second SO-DIMM alone. If each work alone and in either socket, just not together that's sounds like a firmware alteration issue.

Hi Dan,

SO-DIMM are not working alone, I have just tested.

@oscartol - Check the specs! Make sure its 1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3

@danj Yes it's the good specs. I bought it here : https://fr.ifixit.com/Boutique/Mac/MacBo...

And I double checked, on the SO-DIMM : 1066 MHz PC3-8500 DDR3.
