Hi i am just thinking ahead - camera of the iPhone 4s has been upgraded is there any change to the back cover ?
I also was curious if apple would know if you replaced the back cover?
blue stuff on the screws?

Be weary of clip placement on the back cover... there are certain points that it attaches to the housing; these points are different between the CDMA and GSM model iPhone 4s; at least one of the two will not work.

Wanted to get pics of 4, 4S and the replacement before posting, sorry.
End result:
The back panel I bought for my 4S -DOES NOT- fit!
of course it will fit an iPhone 4, but not a 4S.
Also, as you may have read, cover-cases that have EXACT cutouts for the mute switch and volume buttons will not fit either. I couldn't take a picture, but stood them up next to each other and the mute switch is in quite a different spot. Volume buttons were only very slightly off. A case that has a wide, open area (without exact cutouts) will probably fit.
Also note: This two original iPhones 4 and 4S are from Japan's Softbank carrier, most likely the same as AT&T's carrier model.
There is another carrier in Japan, KDDI/Au, which carries the CDMA version, however I have yet to see one.

The CDMA iPhone 4 back panel is compatible with the i4s. GSM i4 back panel is NOT compatible with iPhone 4s.
So basically a Verizon or Sprint iPhone 4 back will fit any iPhone 4s and vice versa.

iphone 4 and iphone 4s is not compatible, sw-box have iPhone 4s back cover already
Comparing the back covers from a iPhone 4 and a 4s, it is ALMOST compatible. I am unsure of the reason but Apple moved the switch used to mute the phone a wee bit lower down. This is, the back cover as the hole for the camera is in place, but the switch gets covered in the 4s Version.
I tried to replace cracked iPhone 4S back with the iPhone 4 back. It looks identical but doesn't fit.
It looks to me like the camera lens and flash diffuser are permanently fixed to the back on the 4s, so any 4s back cover would need to have those in place -- unless anyone else has managed to remove them safely?
confirmed, the 4s has a different config on the back cover. I also purchased a non oem back cover & it does not fit.

I am also wondering about this... i bought an aluminum replacement back cover (not authorized by Apple), but I wonder if it will fit.

I would think that as long as you have replaced the back with a 'glass' version, they wouldn't know.
We'll find out in a couple of days when my 4S arrives!!

ok so i have bought my new cover from sw-box.com... it arrived today, got a wee screw driver and the screws came out easy..
took the iPhone 4s cover off and noticed that there was one bracket moved- up - top left - or opposite of the camera hole
so the iPhone 4 back covers do not fit the iPhone4s.. rage
