No sound in the bottom speaker

Hi all.

I have an iPhone XS in my shop, that i’m experincing issues with. There is no sound in the bottom speaker, no matter what i do, it seems.

I have replaced the charging conn. flex, along with the speaker itself - i’ve done this a couple of times on the phone to exclude faulty sparepart. I’ve also done a complete reset to exclude software (no recovered data) - and i’m starting to accept the fact that it may be mainboard-related. Has anyone come across a situation like this on XS? Is it perhaps audio-IC like on iphone 7, or something else?

Thanks in advance :D

Hello Mikkel. As you suspect, this is most likely logic board related. The problem could be the audio IC although I suspect it has more to do with the interposer layer between the two boards. This can happen following drops or over time through repeated micro-flexing. In a sense, the same root cause for the iPhone 7 Audio IC issue but a totally different result on the sandwich-like design of the X series.

Hi Minho - always happy to see a reply from you ;) Hmm.. I was beginning to think as much, and i've been looking at MB-separator tools for the X/XS etc., but i have no idea how to go about it - i do SMD repairs, backlight, IC's, FPC-conns and such, but i haven't been "playing around" with the sandwich boards.. Yet..:D do i "just" take the boards apart and resolder them, or do i need to for example, reball the Audio IC as well?

Well.. And while i have your attention..:D - i also have another iPhone XS, that's been waterdamaged. All works after replacing screen, all but the sim-reader. It does not detect sim-card - does not tell that there is no sim-card installed, and does not react when putting one in.

The phone still has both IMEI-numbers in settings, both physical and e-sim, so i don't nescessarily suspect that the baseband is done for, but i still could be - but to my knowledge, the IMEI's would be gone? Any other idea? Just a defective simcard reader? :)

Working on these sandwich boards is not trivial, I certainly wouldn't start with a customer phone. The youtube masters make it look so effortless but like anything else, it requires practice and dedication.

The audio IC is available on the top of the sandwich so I would certainly probe it first and you could always reflow, reball or replace it. If the problem is the interposer, then it will have to be separated and reballed. You could try something like the iSocket to test the boards before putting them back together.

Hi Mikkel. For the other device with the SIM issue, you could try to replace the SIM Reader, it's not too difficult although caveat emptor always applies with these sandwich boards ;-).
