How do I fix my iPhone with dead strip at the bottom?

Hey there.

I have a broken iPhone 3G, and I'm not exactly sure about what I need to replace.

I can't touch the bottom fifth of the screen - it simply won't respond at all, including the keyboard. As well, the small stripes won't seem to go away no matter what I do, and looks like it's stuck on the display. That's the area where it won't respond.

I've looked at the products on iFixit, and I'm a bit hesitant to follow the guide which involves using a heat gun/blow dryer, and I'd appreciate it if there was a solution that didn't involve heating something up and removing parts off it (Hopefully I can just buy that frame or whatever it is).

I have a few pictures of the problem:

There are dead strips at the bottom where the coloring is different.

I cannot touch, and it won't respond to me touching below that striped area.

Hopefully it might be a bit easier to see it here.

I'd really appreciate it if I knew specifically what parts I needed to buy, like the digitizer, LCD screen, bezel, or any other parts needed to fix this without a hot gun/hair dryer.

Links would be helpful.

Thanks!

Looks like you have dead pixels on your LCD. this should NOT prevent the digitizer from working on those areas. SO , to me it looks like you will need to change the LCD and the digitizer. The instructions are here and no heat involved. I would go with replacing the whole display assembly, available here as well as here and many other places ;-) It is easier to replace the assembly, trust me on that.

Thanks for the quick reply! Just to confirm, the most top layer is the digitizer, then the LCD screen is below it? Is there anything in between the digitizer in top and the LCD?

As well, the digitizer is the part where it detects input, and the LCD is just the display, right?

I see that the ifixit link is $99.99, and the other one not as expensive. Are there reasons why the ifixit link is just so much more expensive?

Thanks.

You are right with your description. The digitizer is the part that detects your touch, LCD just does the display. the difference in price is that ifixit is really guarantees their products and do stand behind what they are selling. Not a fly-by-night company. I guess just like anything else in life, you get what you pay for. Sometimes the cheaper parts are okay as well. Your call on that one ;-) The only thing I really really strongly suggest is that you get the assembly. It can be a royal PITA to piece it together if you try the separate pieces. Just my 2cents....hope this helps.

Would you suggest buying these parts in eBay or some other cheaper alternative? $20 and $100 is really a huge difference.

Referring to what you said earlier, you said it might be a pain if I buy each part individually. Would it still be the same if I bought only the digiizer and LCD display (because that's all that's broken)?

What if I just replaced those two parts? Would it make it easier or cheaper?

Not much cheaper, but definitely way more difficult. If you buy an assembly you can truly get it done in minutes. The individual parts are a bit cheaper, but you will have to transplant the home button (PITA) and the ear piece speaker. So don't throw anything away until you are done with your repair. I personally prefer to get the assembly and be done with it....;-) but that is just my preference.

just to put a penny or 2 in... I buy them separate, no problem really but I have done a fair few, my first repair was a broken screen and it truly wasn't so hard... just remember to keep the hard metal backing and the frame that has the home button and earpiece on. You don't need to take them off etc, but you need to make sure that you get double sided adhesive/tape with your digitiser to stick the digitiser back on to midframe. As OT3 says the complete assembly saves drama, buying the 2 screens saves money.

It depends how confident you are with the repair.

I have never bought an assembly and think the components are an easy enough repair.

On ebay you can get a Digitizer and LCD for about £15 / $22

The parts have always worked for me and takes about 10-15 minutes to fit.

Its your call as OT's suggestion would be slightly easier, and slightly quicker but cost a lot more.

As far as the quality if you look through the listings on ebay many sellers offer 12 month warranties on their parts too!

Thanks, I've actually gotten past that part already, but right now I think I broke the #3 connector (read above post please).
