replaced wii laser now new error and making noise

I've had it apart 3 times already so I'm getting good at it! Replaced the laser then got 'An error has occurred...' and making a clicking noise. took it all apart and saw that the rod that had to be taken out to attached the plastic guide wasn't all the way in the hole. Pushed it father in and reassembled. Now the disc starts spinning quietly but then starts making a constant noise again. I think it has to do with the plastic guide because that thing looks like it is about to crumble. Anyway, was wondering if anyone else got this error after reassembling and if there's some detail I'm missing in regards to that section of the fix. I'm almost sure the problem is in that part of the reassemble.
