Replaced dvd drive w one from ifixit. Still says “cannot read disc”?

Wii won’t read ANY discs. Gives the black-screen “cannot read” error and sporadically the Disc Channel error. Replaced dvd drive with ifixit replacement drive. Now it gives the Disc Channel “cannot read” error every time. Will not read Wii OR GameCube discs.

Is there something I’m missing with this error? How likely is it that the drive I received is defective?
