My laptop stays at 1% and won't charge

This happened a few days ago but I realized that my Macbook Pro isn’t charging and stays at 1%. It powers off immediately if I unplug the charger. It says “Service Recommended: The battery is performing normally, but its ability to hold a charge is less than when it was new. You may want to consider replacing the battery”. What does it mean “the battery is performing normally but you may want to consider replacing the battery”?? Does it mean the battery is already old? I’ve also tried resetting SMC but it didn’t even turn back on when I pressed the power button. I have macOS Catalina 10.15.7 and haven’t updated to Big Sur since there’s not enough storage on my HD. I bought this in Spring 2019 and I’ve been using for almost 2 years now. Since the March 2020, I started using my laptop heavily since I started working remotely (10hrs~/day). I gotta admit sometimes I left it plugged to the charger even when it was 100% and just closed my laptop without turning the power off. I guess these kind of things eventually made my laptop’s battery to go worn out but is this normal? I just wanted to see if there’s any way I can fix it. If not, I guess I just have to pay to get it fixed. I can use my laptop if it is plugged to the charger so I’ve been using my laptop for the last few days but I don’t wanna keep using like this since it might cause another problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi

Had the same problem on a couple of laptops (not necessarily all MacBooks). Sometimes disconnecting the battery helps to fix the problem, but in the majority of cases I had to replace the battery to fix the issue.

First follow the iFixit guide (MacBook Pro 13" Function Keys 2017 배터리 교체 - until step 12) to disconnect the battery cable. Wait 5 minutes. Plug the cable back in and test.

If the issue is not fixed, most likely the battery management module has failed or there is an issue with one of the cells.

Lithium cells are notorious for catching fire and to be honest I would not take any chances with them. Unless you are able to take it to a trusted third-party repair shop to check it and see if they can fix the management module, I would simply buy a new battery.

Except for the annoying indication that battery is not charging and the fact that you cannot use unless it's powered in, there is no further risk in running like that.

Hi Mizuki,

Most likely you have an issue with your charger circuit. If your battery was corrupt (in my experience) it would still indicate charging, but the charge level would drop rapidly after unplugging the charger.

Firstly, you can try the solution that @sarlagri suggested, to eliminate the fact that you have a dead battery.

If you have the means to remove the back cover and get some measurements, you would be able to diagnose the fault yourself. All you need is a multimeter, your motherboard number (820-XXXX) and you can find schematics online to check for errors. Members here in iFixit are really helpful so I am sure if you start troubleshooting, you will have all the support you can find here.
