iMac randomly freezes and restarts

I have owned this particular iMac (2020 27” 5k) with 128GB of RAM (from OWC) since mid November.

Just recently, My iMac would freeze (or if I’m watching something like youtube or twitch, the audio would stutter and loop) for about 10 -15 seconds and then restarts.

The fan gets louder during the freeze also. I’ve reset my SMC, rebooted the computer in safe mode, and read somewhere that antivirus software messes with Apple stuff, so I deleted my Avast using AppCleaner. It seemed to work for a while, but the issue popped up a few days ago again.

I’m not sure if I have to re-install my OS or if the RAM could be the culprit. I’ve checked my activity monitor and I’m using like only a third of my RAM most of my time (I’m a storyboard artist and illustrator along with doing 2d animation).

I’ve an EtreCheck and this is what I got: EtreCheck Report

EtreCheck doesn't really go deep enough. Its a good data collector of your systems info which can be very useful!

But lets get a bit deeper here running the onboard diagnostics. With the Samsung external drive disconnected restart your system and press the D key

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

Hi Dan,

I've restarted my desktop and press and held the D key. Once the diagnostic was finished, I received a screen stating that "No issues found, reference code: ADP000" I read what this is and supposedly it meant possibly software related.

Funny enough, my computer froze a few minutes before I typed in this reply and I decided to do a check using terminal (after restart) for previous shutdown cause. What I got was a "previous shutdown cause: 6" Tried looking it up and could't find a meaning to that particular number.

Mine has the exact same issue, did you find a solution?

@Gareth Edwards - What is your OS version?

Did you try what I posted?

Hi everyone. I have exactly same issue with same setup and memory.

Have you found any solution???

4 passes of memtest found nothing.

At this point you’ll need to backup your stuff, setup a USB Bootable OS installer drive, wipe the drive down fully and reformat using the external drives Disk Utility (better than using the onboard recovery partition) to make sure you don’t have any Malware or Virus floating around. Reinstall the OS and before adding anything back install a good anti-Malware/Virus app/s to then check your backup drive. I would encourage you download fresh copies of your apps from the publishers as well.

How to create a bootable macOS Catalina installer drive

Also stick with macOS Catalina (10.15.x) don’t jump to Big Sur yet!

In its self this won’t fix everything, I would look at your RAM. I would talk with OWC to make sure the RAM they sent you is the correct SO-DIMM’s you might even want to get a fresh set. Unless you really need the full 128 GB how about taking 64GB out to see if that helps. Then swap the other 64GB in to see if one of the SO-DIMM’s is bad.

You appear to have a Samsung T5 external drive make sure you are using the thunderbolt port and don’t use it for your boot drive.

You clearly have issues which EtreCheck did find:

Heavy RAM usage - Apps are using a large amount of RAM.

Clean up - There are orphan files that could be removed.

Unsigned files - There are unsigned software files installed. Apple has said that unsigned software will not run by default in a future version of the operating system.System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

32-bit Apps - This computer has 32-bits apps will not work on current versions of the operating system.

Limited drive access - More information may be available with Full Drive Access.

Kernel extensions present - This computer has kernel extensions that may not work in the future.

Sharing enabled - This computer has sharing services enabled that could be a security risk.

Given the version of macOS you are running you should fully remove all of the 32-bit apps and extensions

32-bit Applications:

Kernel Extensions:

Okay will do the a reformat of my drive this weekend when I don’ t have to use it for work. I’ll double check with OWC if my RAM could be the issue or it has compatibility problems. Yeah, I’ve only have my T5 plugged in the USB-C port and it’s not my boot drive.

Speaking of RAM, have you ever used MemTest86? I read that it’s a tool that is able to test out RAM and do diagnostics on them. If so, would you recommend I try that for RAM testing or should I go another route (like physically putting sections RAM to possibly isolate the issue like you’ve mentioned)?

Thanks

Yes! I've used it and sometimes it finds a problem other times it didn't. Thats also true with SO-DIMM swap out as well. The problem is the patterns written may not be the one that kicks you. Think how a certain tune will shatter a crystal wine glass at the correct volume Shattering Wineglass

This is what makes finding a bad memory cell or if the RAS/CAS of the RAM is not correct (using the wrong speed RAM)
