MacBook Pro: 820-00426 no power and overheating power chip

Good morning.

A customer gave me a broken MacBook Pro (A1398, mid 2015) that now I want to try to repair without replacing the entire motherboard. The motherboard version is: 820-00426.

With the great help of a thermal camera, I’ve seen that some ICs like Q7130, Q7135 and the capacitor nearby start overheating as the PSU completed the handshake (green light on, 20V output and then orange light).

On the PPDCIN_G3H_CHGR rail there are almost 20V (19.8V) instead of the expected 18.5V, so I suppose that could be an issue on the U7100 on the back.

As supposed, the U7100 Power Chip overheats quickly and on its PIN 26 (CHGR_SGATE) the voltage is always 19.8V.

Should I try to replace the U7100 chip (ISL6259AHRTZ) or have I to look for another issue? Hoping that Q7130 and co. are still alive.

Thanks!

The voltage on pin 26 will vary depending on the wattage of the magsafe you are using. I don’t think anyone hear will be able to help you with the info you provided. You will at least have to check all secondary power lines.

Have you tried SMC bypass to rule out sensors?

I would spend sometime reviewing Louis Rossmann’s YouTube vids here:Louis Rossmann as well as Paul Daniels YouTube vids here: pldaniels MicroElectronics Repairs
