Forgot my BIOS Password!

I bought this laptop 4 years ago and only got to use it for 6 months because I set a bios password and cant remember the password for the life of me. I’ve tried everything. I even contacted MSI to ask for help. The C-Mos battery has been out for over 2 years now. PLEASE help me get this beast up and running again! Thanks!

Wait what? If the CMOS battery is out, and the main battery is out, and there is not external power brick connected, it should clear any and all bios settings. Can you confirm that this is the case? As in you have pulled out the button battery cell from inside the laptop?

Also confirm you have done a "clear CMOS" this way and holding POWER button for 15 seconds to insure all power has cleared out of the device.

You might have to restart it after that without the CMOS battery in, and then shutdown and plug in the CMOS battery and start up again.

COMS battery is removed.

@redhighheels yes but can you confirm the other steps I suggested?

I've done everything.

Can you not load a USB in, and choose boot from USB?

You will need a programmer to remove the password from the bios chip. The easiest way for you would be to purchase a pre-programmed bios chip. You can purchase them for around $20 but you will need some soldering experience to replace it.

John,

I’m confused are you trying to get into the BIOS or boot from a different drive. If it’s the boot options you need, F11 will do that. Obviously DEL is the BIOS startup key for this machine. If the CMOS is still not clearing, there should be a CMOS clear jumper (or pins you have to short out yourself). I wonder if @jayeff can help here.

Hi @dunc ,

Clearing CMOS does not clear the "BIOS password" anymore on most machines nowadays

AFAIK there is no BIOS password reset or any backdoor method to reset the supervisor password. The only solution is to replace the motherboard or replace the chip on the board where it is stored or maybe contact MSI and send in the board

Clearing CMOS will restore the settings in BIOS but not the passwords.

Security is paramount it seems

I've got a diary and a flash drive (both securely separately hidden), just for all my passwords - I'm getting old ;-)

@jayeff good to know, thank you.
