Laptop only boots with AC, but functions with battery afterwards

I have an acer Nitro (i7-4720hq, 860m) and it has a new battery I put in it. But for some reason it boots for 5 seconds (on battery power) just to turn off. Then I boot it with the ac adapter and it boots fine, unplug it, then it works as it normally should on battery power alone. So I am confused why this is the case.

Hi @has99crafting ,

Does it do this when starting in safe mode?

Yes it does, just checked now.

I would agree with jayeff that calibration is worth looking at.

This site looks fairly good for instructions:

I fixed one last year by just leaving the battery out for about a week, I think - maybe longer, and it works fine now.

The BIOS for this is very scant, the only things I am able to do is switch boot priority, legacy/uefi mode, enable or disable fast boot, and put a lock on the bios thats actually all it allows sadly.

@has99crafting

Have you tried the calibration instructions form site above? I have also had some luck with freeware battery calibration software.

Yeah i dont remember exactly but it said something about needing to pay or subscribe

@has99crafting

Read it again. Just the "Manually calibrate the laptop battery" part. No charge or subscribing for that part.

Hi @has99crafting ,

Try getting into BIOS on startup and check that you can do this OK when on battery only and that it doesn't shutdown.

Press F2 on startup to access BIOS before it boots into Windows.

If it boots without the Acer splash screen you may have to disable Fast Startup in Windows and then restart the laptop so that you can get into BIOS without going through Windows.

If that works OK then I ‘m thinking it's an OS problem.

Just to make sure all is OK with the new battery create a Win 10 battery report and check the Design capacity value against the Full charge capacity value. Being a new battery they should be the same.

Also I can't find it in the user manual but when in BIOS check if there is a battery calibrate option at all.

Yeah I disabled fast start so I could get into bios with DEL, but when im just using battery it turns off as if its low power. This is odd because if I boot with AC and then unplug it, it will then run on battery fine I even played one hour of a 1080p video just to see. So I am not sure. and the powershell check shows that it is charged slightly above recommended, I think something like 47,000 and it was holding 50,000

@has99crafting

So if it also turns off in BIOS maybe try calibrating the battery the old fashioned way. Boot into Windows using the AC and then run on the battery until it discharges to the point where it shuts down the laptop and then fully charge the battery before starting again on the battery only

Okay I will try this and come back tomorrow to see how it has done.

It didnt work
