Home button not working following lightning connector replacement

Hi Ifixit community,

I braved a replacement of my Iphone 7 lightning connector, it seems to have gone okay in that everything is working apart from the home button. Speaker is okay, it’s charging okay, the touch on the display seems fine, but when I turn it on it says “Touch ID cannot be activated”. It’s not just touch ID though, the home button doesn’t seem to work at all. I’ve tried multiple force restarts but no success, and checked the display cables which seem to be fine. Could someone advise if this is likely to be a hardware issue due to my repair or an apple-being-annoying issue, and if they have any suggestions for how to fix it? I’ve gone through all the answers on here without any success.

It will definitely be the home button flex on the screen. You might not be able to see it as sometimes the tears are very tiny and need some kind of magnification to see. It usually occurs at the 90 degree bend.

 A new screen will bring back the home button as the flexes are not repairable.

Ah what a bummer, are you sure? I was so careful! I was hoping it was something to do with apple trying to lock me out of my phone, as everything else seems to be working.

@d00nad Yes I am sure. If you moved the screen side to side while getting it out of the top bevel is all it takes to get that microscopic tear.

What a pain. I've called my local repair shop to ask about screen replacement (feel like I'm likely to just keep breaking things) but I didn't realise that they won't be able to make touch ID work because only an apple shop can do that. Starting to think this wasn't worth it in the first place - Apple sure do go out of their way to make it difficult!

@d00nad You will not need to go to apple to get your touch ID working. Your flex on the screen is the problem. A new screen will fix it.

@d00nad Just to clarify Chris' information; there's a cable on the screen that connects the home button to the motherboard. That's the one he's referring to that he believes is damaged; he has a lot of experience here so I'm going to defer to his diagnosis. Once the old home button is transferred to the new screen, your Touch ID should be restored since the original button is almost certainly fine; it's just that connecting cable that needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, it's integrated as part of the screen, so the only way to put in a new one is with a new screen. The good news is that your phone is old enough that screens are quite inexpensive now; I just bought one on AliExpress for my granddaughter's iPhone 7 for under $12 USD.

I’d remove the screen and all the connectors carefully of course, battery first. Check around the home button connection on the board (Small one nearest to the frame) for any components that might have been knocked off. You will probably have to remove the foam covering them. If all ok then reseat the connections making sure they are flat. I’ve seen a connector sitting less than a mm too high stopping the button from working. Whilst your at it check the home button connector and ribbon on the screen for damage as mentioned earlier.
