MacBook Pro Battery Calibration completely messed up

So, I’ve been fixing up an old MacBook, did some upgrading, replaced the battery with one from iFixit, etc…

I calibrated the battery from the usual procedure, charged it, waited 2 hours, left it to die, charged it again, and everything worked great. A little bit after that, I guess I made the mistake of leaving it for a few days, resulting in it dying. I believe this actually made it recalibrate the battery, in a very bad way. I tried to power it on a few days later, no power, no response, nothing.

Hooked up the charger, it powered on, battery lights came on this time, and it was 100% charged… Pulled the charger out - instant shut off. And that’s the basics of it, and my hunch is - it’s somehow recalibrated the 0% flag to be 100% charged. So I thought - just recalibrate it? Well you can’t - it won’t charge it any more since it think it’s already charged, and you can’t drain it because it dies as soon as power is pulled. And I’ve already left it for several days for it to be fully dead anyway, so it’s just stuck dead. Any help or ideas on how to recalibrate it would be appreciated.

Also the condition is “replace now,” but the cycle count is 7. I did some research and the replace now condition on a new battery is a problem with an improper calibration, resulting in the same conclusion as before.

Thanks, Pyrotex7

I'm Sorry it was such a chore. Thank You!

Did you encounter any issues when you replaced the battery? Is that all you did this time you serviced your system?

You’re welcome, sorry if I was a bit gruff - opening a computer I just fixed to no response anywhere scared me quite a bit, so I got a little frustrated at it also. I replaced the drive, the RAM, repasted the CPU, and did a general cleanout. One thing I did not specify was that it was a broken MacBook I acquired from eBay, so it had no battery in the first place. When I replaced the battery, everything seemed to work great, I only had problems with those tri-point screws that break easier than philips head…. I also had to use the MacBook with a 60W charger for a time, which seemed to work fine, it even would power on without a battery, but apparently not anymore (this time it only will turn on with the 85W charger). Hopefully that didn’t mess anything up.

I just got it to turn on with like the emergency mode or something - using the 60W charger, I can press the power button in a couple ways while unplugging and replugging the charger, which is how I got it to first respond with no battery before any repairs. This time it’ll run the fans loud (same as before), eject the disk, and make a slight chime with the display on for a second, but them it instantly shuts off again, unlike last time. Maybe it realizes there’s only 60W, or it tries to start using the battery.
