Why won't my fan run at top speed?

Ok, so I cleaned it all out and put it all back together exactly as it was taken apart and it all works great untill about an hour after playing (Dead By Daylight), it just shuts down with no warning. I'm almost certain that it's the system overheating, as I get the thermal throttling in game. But when I play a more relaxed game (like Rocket League) it runs just fine and stays nice and cool for the most part. What can I do to solve this issue? I'm leaning towards hardwiring the fan to the PSU by bridging the 5v brown wire of the fan to the 12v prong on the motherboard. Would that work?

Ok so I have replaced the thermal pads with brand new ones bought kryonaught paste for it and replaced the fan and the dang thing still refuses to kick into high gear.. does anyone have a solution for this predicament? I'm stuck thermally throttling..

This could possibly be a software issue. Try factory reseting and wiping the console first before anything else. This usually fixes problems like this.

I would also recommend reseting it in safe mode which will allow you to completely wipe the firmware on the console which should resolve the fan issue.

I am with Bob Singer on this one seems like a software issue now since part replacement did not do any good. Try starting with Rebuild Database first since that wont completely wipe out your data saved on the console. If that fails then do a system reinstallation or factory rest as Bob mentioned. If all that fails probably PSU is failing. If you have a friend with the same PS4 probably try using their power supply to check if all others fail.

Slight update, thank you for your Idea Bob, but alas I am still thermally throttling. After doing the reset of the system twice still no luck on the fan speeds. I'm looking into PSU's right now, but it's an older system so its kinda hard to find in my area. Mr.Nimbus my question to you, is there any way to just test my PSU with a multimeter to rule it out. Or is the only way to find and test another unit in my current system? Thank you again guys, this is really helping narrow this issue down.

I’d say check your fan cable first before doing the hard wiring. The cable or the fan itself might be damaged.

I have checked over the cable for the fan and the connection on the board, and didn't see any issues. I read somewhere that by spinning the fan via the canned air I may have overloaded the circuit board from EMF. But I'm not sure if that would be the issue. I just need a temporary fix, and thought hardwired would be that fix atleast untill the new fan comes in. Thank you for your help.

I would just suggest to wait and get a new fan than to hardwiring. Seems like the fan is failing because the ps4 sends control signals to the fan through one of the fan’s three wires for specific speed. If the ps4 is sending max fan speed signal and the fan is not turning at that much then the fan is faulty. Try taking the consoles top off and observing the fan patterns respective to game load and resting modes. Also alternative to hardwiring (little bit more tedious but could be fun) probably just take the fans wires and connect to a battery if that may not work due to no control signals then you may need to hook up an Arduino to send control signals to it and control the fan.

I plan to order a new fan, I'm just waiting on funds to do so, how would I go about wiring the fan up to a battery, would it need to be a 12v battery? Would it work just as well to wire it to a switch and 12v adapter (from an old cellphone)? Sorry for all the questions just really frustrated. And thank you for all your help. I probably shouldn't have bought refurbished.

A 12V battery should do it. I had replaced one of my previous fans which was a KSB0912HE and on the fan it said it was 12V with 1.4A. You could alternatively use the 12V adapter since it outputs DC as well just would be a little dangerous if you have naked solder joints and you accidentally touch it. Also with the adapter you have to make sure that it doesn't output more than the ratings of the fan or the fan could become faulty. For wiring the fan, you could put the brown wire to + of 12V battery and its black wire to - of 12V battery. The white wire would be the control wire and it may require a +5V battery input.
