Freezer humming, freezer burn and melting items in less than a day?

I have a GE model:

gts16dthjrww

Fridge fine. Freezer humming and picture shows the holes in back aren't blocked and making slushy type freezer burn on items which are meeting.

I made sure it's level and unplugged few min and plugged in. Out if warranty. 2019.

Installed by state home energy program I was worried for in maybe 2018¿

Any help as it's Saturday and I am on fixed income and basically freeze a lot and no backup or $ to fix.

Thanks!!

Jen

Hi @sunandstars ,

Check whether the evaporator fan located inside the freezer compartment behind a panel is operating or whether it is iced over.

Here’s a link to the freezer parts diagram for your model, which shows the layout which may help.

Here’s a link to the fan part which has a video showing how to access the fan in the freezer. It may not be the exact same way for your model as it may just show the one way to remove it.

If the fan is iced over then you have a defrost problem.

This could be caused by a faulty defrost heater, a faulty defrost thermostat or a blocked drain leading from beneath the evaporator unit to the evaporator pan under the compartments near the compressor.

If the drain in blocked, the meltwater from the auto defrost cycle can’t drain away and evaporate and will refreeze when the defrost cycle has ended and this continues with every defrost cycle which occurs ~ 10 hours, so the ice will build up and eventually it will ice over the fan forcing it to stop, even though it may still try to turn, hence the humming sound perhaps.

Do the lights in the refrigerator compartment turn off when you manually operate the door switch, with the door open? If not then it may be a faulty door switch. Besides controlling the lights, the door switch also signals the control board to turn off the fan as you don’t want to blow cold air out of the refrigerator with a door open.

It sounds very much like the evaporation fan has stopped working.

I have had the same problem & will tell you what I did to mine & it still working now.

If you are not sure of what you are doing, please seek a professional.

I took everything out of freezer after unplugging it, found the screw hole covers & took them off. (2 plastic things) come off easily with a small flat screwdriver, then took out the 2 screws.

The bottom of freezer comes out revealing Styrofoam insulation, coils that the fan blows on, & the fan.

I plugged it in to see if fan was working & of course no it wasn't, unplugged it & unplugged fan from inside freezer, sprayed it with some lithium grease that was made to be okay for electronics.

Cleaned the blades & around it with warm water (hot), plugged it back in and into the wall to make sure it was working. It actually took a few minutes of spinning it & stopping it to make sure it would start on it own.

Put it all back together & it has been working for 8 months now with no issues.

I do not recommend anyone to use this method but it worked for me.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply

So I am a young widow, but if you think it can be done fairly easily, I can most likely figure it out. I can assemble things etc and know more than average female I would guess.

Horrible last line that leads to this question:

I am basically imagining this? (Photo)

Anything I can do on back of fridge? Vents on back and bottom and I live in a split level home and have wood paneling so it gets very dusty.

I got in 2016 and no maintenance has been done.

Thanks
