How to acquire iMac serial number: Worn off of chassis & no boot

I think the power supply died on my iMac. I took it to the Genius Bar at Apple. The serial number had worn off the bottom of the stand. I purchased the iMac on ebay about 4 years ago and did not register the computer. Apple will not repair it until I supply serial number.

Question. I have the hard drive backed up. Is there a way I can access the serial number info from within my old G4 running OS 10.4?

Alternatively. Can I open the case and locate a serial number. the guy at the genius bar said he would have to access the hard drive and since it cannot boot up. He can't.

You'r welcome, thanks for accepting the answer. Don't worry about doing it yourself, check you've got all the tools required, follow the guide step by step, watch the screws, and take your time. At least you won't have to remove the glass panel like I do :(, still waiting for the suction cup and i'm a bit worried..

Yes, you can find it on the mid plane assembly, see here Apple support website.

But beware, if you bought it on ebay and if the serial number has been erased, it is possible that your iMac has been stolen. If you bring your iMac at the Genius Bar and if it has been reported stolen, they'll take it and you'll never see it again, they won't care you bought it from someone else. Apple explained me this when my macbook pro got stolen last year, the best thing to do is to call them first or go at the Apple Store without it, and tell them the serial number. But they can also tell you nothing and ask you to bring it.

I wish they could force the location when a mac got stolen :(
