taking apart iPod 1st Gen (desolder)

Hi, Does anyone know how to take apart the cover type of thing over the hold switch/jack/firewire connector on this old style iPod? Once done any ideas how to replace the firewire connector? Please see step 14 on link iPod 1세대 로직 보드 교체 to see what I am referring to. Thanks, Nick.

Thanks for the info. It has helped me. Yes there were anchors like you mentioned. The firewire connector also was just like you mentioned. I found the part by buying another broken iPod of same kind. Now my issue is headphone jack. I would like to replace it too since its chipped off. This one though is fused to the mother board and I am not sure how to remove it nor how to put a new one in. Any help appreciated. Thanks! Nick

Nick, I think this one is surface mount and it's a bit of a challenge. You shoulder be capable of desoldering it, you might try a hot air desoldering. Looks like all the pins are connected on the left hand side of the jack.

Hello oldturkey03 - I had to get help from a professional to remove the surface mounted jack. He used a desoldering wick followed by a hot air desoldering gun to do the job. I checked online and the hot air guns are all expensive. Any reasonable piced ones out there that you can recommend for future projects? Thanks, Nick

The hot air gun to reflow you can get from the ifixit YLOD kit For a hot air soldering station I have a relative inexpensive Aoyue 2702A+ (~$300) and so far I have had fun with it. Needed to practice a lot ;-)

clickokemail, if I remember right, the upper rim that houses the firewire connector, headphone port and hold slider are held in place by a number of metal clips. You should just have to unclip it. Do make sure that there are no anchors to the logic board. The firewire port is soldered onto the logic board in nine places. Four, at the corners of the firewire port, and six thin leads that come off the bottom of the port. It will be tough to find the part, you might have to scrounge from a broken one of eBay or Craigslist etc. Sometimes, you can find them at Mouser or Digikey. Of course, there are places like this, that still repair the iPod for you.

I believe what happens over time is that due to the firewire cable being so hard to pull out of the connector, those 4 anchor tabs become separated from the board, and now it puts stress on the 6 small pins everytime you pull out the cable.
