Where is the left palm rest temp sensor?

I have a MBP 13" 2010 that suffers from a faulty and very temperamental temperature sensor. When the bottom case rests flat on a table, or any surface for that matter, it causes the sensor to register a nonsensical temp of -128C, the fans to kick into overdrive, and kernal_task to consume 180% of CPU. Simply pressing on the bottom case around the general location of the RAM also will reproduce the same effect.

According to Bresink's Temperature Monitor the sensor at fault is the "left palm rest" sensor. Where is this sensor specifically? Is it on the top / bottom of the logic board? Integrated into the top case? Any info about this sensor would be greatly appreciated.

SOLVED!!!!!!!

The sensor is located on the back of the touchpad! I just removed the touchpad and ordered a new one (WITH the cable leading to the logicbaord).

If you remove this cable from the board, the left palm sensor immediately gets crazy (-128 °C). But when I connect it, the values are right again and fan is normal.

So the problem obvious was that the bottom case applied pressure on the cable (or the plug) from the touchpad cable. This resulted then in the failure.

Now the macbook temporarily runs without touchpad BUT it is quiet and "normal" again :)!

I assume that the cable with the touchpad connector and left palm sensor has a break or something.

Can't wait to hear if it works for you, too.

Thanks Jan! I was able to replicate the issue simply by unplugging the cable from the logic board.

As my touchpad still works, I might just try to replace the ribbon.

Do post back once you've replaced and tested it.

Replaced touchpad with cable!

Now my MacBook works smooth and quiet as new :)

Thank you Jay. I stumbled across this info in my initial search, however it seems the sensor placement and innards in general of the Macbookpro 7,1 are far different from the 2,1.

I wish I could simply replace a flex cable, but I'm beginning to believe that this sensor may very well be a part of the logic board.

Any and all advice is welcome!

It's located on the hard drive cable under the hard drive bracket affixed to the forward edge of the case.

Help! I have the same problem! Commission, and a cooler full kernel task 178% and disappears parameter palm rest in istat! disassembled computer disconnected the touch pad but nothing has changed! Where the sensor is installed? Sorry for my english I'm from Russia

Hi,

I Have the same issue in MBP Mid 2010, i try everything, change the cable of trackpad and entire trackpad don't work, the sensor with backer from HD cable too and nothing works...

The Palmrest Proximity continues disable after put my hands on top the case, and fans going to High and CPU usage too, and the OS slow down extremely.

Where is really find this "Palmrest Proximity" ????? Please anyone help me!

I read all Apple Technician Guide of MacBook Pro 13 Mid 2010 and anything in there helps.

I have a 2010 macbook pro 13". Same issue.

I believe the sensors that effect this "crippling effect" are the brass pins on springs, scattered throughout the motherboard.

TEST*

1.remove bottom plate of the laptop

2. lift the bottom 1/2 of the laptop from the underside (place fingers near battery/hd)((be sure not to touch any of the brass pins))

3.press power

no fans? wifi works? it's suddenly as fast as it should be and you wonder why you've wasted so much time on this?

Hi there,


I know this is an old topic, but i’ve got exactly the same problem. When there’s no pressure applied to the housing everything works fine, but with pressure (like your lap or just a table) the fan spins up raptly and the cpu is getting hammered. I can’t find any place where something would separate the connection. And I also don’t have a item that was sitting there.


Could it just be the top part of the trackpad ribbon? And if so would a replacement cable solve the issue?
