MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2015 (A1398) right hinge broken

Hello to you

My dear computer is in trouble

I heard a weird noise opening the lid… The right hinge of my MBP is now broken, just not loose, broken. (Like the axel on the right is broken and the lid can raise out of it axel)

My computer is working if I let it open and hold it with ducktape (Poor thing)

I see parts and tutorial on how to fix the left hinge. But I don’t see a tutorial on how to fix a right hinge. Is this fixable?

Or is it too complicated to fix?

(At C$ 10.74, The replacement part seems weird to me… there is a loooong wire that I do not identify beyond the AirPort antenna and camera connector… What is it and where does it go please? )

Apple stores offer screen replacement… Should I put 1000 $CA for a screen replacement or I should invest in new computer?

Thanks! =)

Update (11/25/2021)

Hello Dan

Thank you for taking the time to respond to me. =)

I went to the Genius bar earlier. They told me that the right hinge is officially broken. And that the sreen is not holding its connection to the bottom part of my MBP. And this would eventually cause bigger problem… (like Breaking cables and Breaking the screen…)

And he even help me find a replacement online… !

But, I find no tutorial on replacing the right hinge. When I open my MBP, I disconected the three AirPort antenna cables and the camera connector.

Like we can see in the screen replacement tutorial in step 8

When I open my MBP I clearly see the rights connectors on this picture but I have no clue on where the iSight connector is, as you can see on the left side of this picture.

My question is : Where do we plug the ISight connector…? And is there a tutorial on this?

If it goes Under the retina screen, I will not touch this.

This is too delicate. =)

Thanks again! =)

Also. mine is a mid 2015, but it must be a similar configuration…

Here it says that iSight cable is Almost impossible to replace without breaking the screen… Help!

@ginac - Sorry somehow my URL link messed up look below to the Blue URL its the guide you need to follow.

Please take the time to check the screws that hold the hinge units on both the main case and the lid as I explained thats your real issue not a broken hinge based on what you expressed in your question.

There is no guide as you would need to take the display apart which is a very big job. Review this display teardown as yours is exactly the same MacBook Pro Retina Display Teardown

A good independent Mac repair person has the skills to do this if you must and it would be a lot cheaper than replacing the assembly, besides the part is quite hard to find (in good shape) as people are still holding on to this series waiting to see how the new M1 MacBook Pro's do (best to wait for the next version to get the problems worked out).

Where are you located Country?

The hinge is replaceable but its a bear to do as you’ve discovered there are a few cables passing through the hollow hinge!

From your description I don’t think the hinge its self is damaged, instead I think the screws which hold it on have loosened up and may have fallen out.

Review the last steps in this guide MacBook Pro 15" Retina Display Mid 2015 Display Assembly Replacement to locate the case side screws see if they are secured and if needed locate the ones that have fallen out. If these screws are present then the lid side screws will need to be tightened. You’ll need to follow the guide to fully remove the lid and then carefully slide off the clutch cover to expose them as well as the antenna bar. Locate the two screws on each side. Using a small dab of finger nail polish just under the screws head to lock it in place.
