New hard disk, how to pass all data from the old one?

I would like to pass from the original 120GB one to a new SATA 500GB 7200 rpm.

Can I use an external hard disk to tranfer all data?

Should I use Time Machine?

Someone have suggestions?

Can you tell us what equipment you have and what you intend to use the data for, ie back up or a new computer.

It would appear they have a MacBook running at least Leopard, Two hard drives and an external hard drive enclosure.

Good guess. Upgrading the internal? Have you on vacation? Missed seeing you.

I just have MacBook Pro 15" running Snow Leopard with the original 120GB Hard Disk and an external Hard Disk (connected wireless with but I can use it with USB connection).

I would like to install a new internal 500gb hard disk in the MacBook Pro and to copy all data from the old to the new one maybe using the other 500 gb external I have already.

It's according to what hardware you have. My guess would be that you are moving up from an IDE or ATA to the new SATA. IF you have an external SATA enclosure and a computer with a IDE drive you can hook up via USB or firewire according to what you have and transfer several ways. What QEII said will work fine. I prefer a program called SuperDuper http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/S.... It's free but the free version is only half as fast as the paid version. If you have two macs then connect them via firewire and start the receiving computer up holding down the "T" key. This is called target mode and the icon of target hard drive will show up on the other computers desktop. You can then use QEII method or the SuperDuper. Do not drag and drop.

Hopes this helps. If you don't have the equipment I've mentioned let me know what you do have and we'll figure it out.

Put the new drive in the external enclosure. Use Disk Utilities to format it. Use SuperDuper to clone the internal drive. Here's how to install it. MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo Model A1211 Hard Drive Replacement

Put them both in external drive enclosures and use disk utility to restore the image from the 120GB drive to the 500GB drive. When you put the 500GB drive in and boot up, it will be identical but you will have far more free hard drive space.

If you need further assistance using Disk Utility, just ask.

Well technically he'd need only one, connect the replacement to the computer, and then clone the internal to the external.

I didn't think you could make changes to a drive you were running the OS on

You can clone directly from your internal if that's what you're asking.

I don't have an external enclosure and I would like not to buy it.
