Running Catalina vs Monterey macOS on a 2.2 Ghz MBP Mid 2015 Thoughts.

I was wondering if anyone uses a Mid 2015 15” Macbook Pro Retina, and has updated from Catalina to Monterey? And if so, was it beneficial for speed and/or keeping the system cool, or the opposite?

Thanks!

Reading from EveryMac - Mid-2015 15” MacBook Pro 15-Inch "Core i7" 2.8 (IG)

This system fully supports the final version of OS X 10.10 "Yosemite," OS X 10.11 "El Capitan," macOS Sierra (10.12), and macOS High Sierra (10.13). Running macOS High Sierra (10.13) or later, it supports HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Coding), but it does not support hardware accelerated HEVC.

This model is compatible with the final version of macOS Mojave (10.14), macOS Catalina (10.15), and macOS Big Sur (macOS 11), as well. It additionally supports the current version of the macOS, macOS Monterey (macOS 12), but it does not support Universal Control, AirPlay to Mac, or Low Power Mode in addition to the more minor Spatial Audio, Portrait Mode, 3D Landmarks, and Interactive Globe features.

I don’t see any benefit jumping to Monterey for this older system. I don’t see anything for being faster or cooler.

I would strongly recommend cleaning out any dust build up internally focusing on the fan blades as well as the heat transfer fins and run a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro watching the systems thermals.

Thank you for that detailed response!

Yes, it doesn't seem that it makes any sense to upgrade. Now my question would be, if I wanted to completely uninstall and reinstall the macOS and keep my current versions (Catalina), how could I do this?

Apple doesn't offer a way to do that easily! Its really a one way street - Upgrade no roll-back options. The Older OS-X and iOS Beta versions offered that, no more.

To get back you need to backup your stuff using an external drive using TimeMachine, Wipe the systems drive down and then re-install the macOS you want (first creating an OS installer thumb drive: running Disk Utility & OS installer app from it), recover the user accounts & Apps as best you can (you may need to re-install from the original sources) and lastly recover your media & work files (data).
