motherboard in my 2 ½ yr old 21.5" iMac burned out.
Where can I buy replacement motherboard? core i5 1Tb 8 G . Apple wants $800 for this part which I think is outrageous. Considering this is a fairly new machine that I spent a hefty check on, I’m bummed that it crashed so early.

Look at the bottom of your systems foot to locate the S/N. Plug it into here EveryMac - Lookup it will give you your systems details please let us know what you found so we can guide you the reset of the way.
