SSD Upgrade - Fan won't stop and noisy

I have a Mac Mini that I’ve recently upgraded by replacing the old HD with an SSD. Since then, the fan has been quite noisy and runs almost all the time. I figure I must not have handled dealing with the temperature sensor correctly or something close to that and it’s trying to cool down the SSD.

I’ve just this week swapped out an old HD for an SSD in my iMac and the kit included the sensor in the link below. Can I use this same sensor and connector on my Mac Mini (which also uses an SSD connection) to keep the fan from running all the time?

The Mac Mini and laptops use external sensors as well as S.M.A.R.T. services within the drive. You don’t need any extra sensor unit.

At this point SMC services has either lost access to the needed sensor or a sensor was damaged. Your system is in CPU safe mode which ramps up the fan and lowers the CPU’s clocking to protect your system. So trying to offset this is not the correct direction.

You should run diagnostics to identify the sensor. Restart your system and press the D key on your keyboard.

Once I identify the sensor, is that something I can replace easily? (In other words, buying the parts and not having to go to a repair store?)

@tangooversway - Lets first get diagnostics done as I can't answer your question in that context.

Okay.

This Mac Mini is in our guest house. It may be a day or two before I can get to it and run diagnostics, so there may be a delay on that.

I know it's a long time - lost power in that building and had a lot of other things go wrong. I finally restarted that Mac and put MacsFanControl on it. It'll be a few days before I can get back down there. I can connect with ScreenSharing. Is there something I can look for on MacsFanControl, with their sensors, that would indicate which one is bad? (If so, I could order now and not have to go down there until I had the proper sensor.) Or is there a way to use software like MacsFanControl to pull the CPU out of safe mode? (As of now, the software has no control over the fan speed, which I'm betting is because it's in safe mode.)

@tangooversway - Sorry - MacsFanControl or any other thermal monitoring app can't alter SMC's CPU Safe mode. I find TG Pro is a better tool. I would install it and then take a snapshot of the main screen and post it here 기존 질문에 이미지 추가하기 if that's the direction you want to take. Even still you'll need to get the full version to gain the TG Pro's diagnostics.

Frankly, I think the onboard diagnostics is the better to start with.

The 2014 Mac mini does not have thermal sensors which are removable from the logic board - but some can be damaged during the upgrade process (they are on the logic board which you need to remove to install a 2.5” SATA SSD)

I would suggest something like MacsFanControl to set the fan speed to the SSD thermal sensor (or another logic sensor which is working correctly)

Thanks. I'm looking into the MacsFanControl to see how it would work for me.

I commented on the other answer that I know it's been 6 months - we lost power to the guest house and it took a long time to find the breaks in a 500' underground cable! Then there were a lot of things to be caught up on or fixed.

I made it down there today to install MacsFanControl. However it does nothing. The fan keeps going at high speed. I suspect that's because the CPU is in safe mode to prevent overheating. Do you know this software well enough to know if there is a way to take the CPU out of safe mode so MFC can handle the fan control instead?
