Lost and dead in an unknown location

Hi everyone,

I have an iphone 11 pro and i accidentally left it on the train. I tried using my Find My app and setting it to lost mode however it is not showing up. On the day (Two days from the time of writing this) i had a full charge on the phone in the morning. Now it doesn't show up at all and i can't find it.

Is anyone able to help me find my iphone even though it is (Presumably) dead?

Hi

I am so sorry to hear about you phone ,there’s somethings we can try though!

First of all it’s not showing up because the battery’s dead or it’s not in a place with WiFi or a cell service

Here’s what we can try, your phone might be neither or the above and iv had a similar issue but my phone was in my house, sometimes the iPhone can be in a deep sleep like state where it’s fully working and trying to send signals but it won’t until someone wakes it’s up!

Like I said this is from personal experience so I would try getting another phone (best bet is a friends who has your number but any will do!)and phoning it a couple times to see if it starts showing up on find my!

Also I would ask the train company’s lost and found to see if they have it:-)

If I think of anything else I will let you know

I hope all goes well for you

Thanks:-)

Good afternoon,

I'm Kam's friend so I'll answer for him (I posted this thread on his account around lunchtime)

His MacBook shows that there is no location found and doesn't show where it was last found. We will sure try phoning the train company later on.

I convinced him out of buying a new phone immediately so that apple won't scam him more.

Cheers,

This is not a repair problem, it's a treasure hunt problem. No one here is able to help you especially when you don't even mention what planet you are on.

As for the Find My settings, the device won't be able to be located as soon as it is wiped via DFU, however the new owner can't activate it without you deleting it from your Apple ID first.

Hey Tom,

Thanks for the reply, he hasn't wiped it yet but rather, put it into lost mode. I find it weird because he started that day (This ordeal has been going on for two days) with a full charge and now it's dead? I find that impossible to believe. We live in Sydney and his find my showed (On the first day of this) it was on the train and then it ended up at Barker college? Hmmmmmm I'm not sure but thanks for the advice. I'll phone my friend to see what he thinks,

Cheers,

@np_f1_2021 A DFU wipe can be performed on the device itself, it's different from the remote wipe ordered via the owner's iCloud account. Once locally wiped, the device will no longer have the FM tokens stored, by definition it can no longer report its position to the owner's iCloud account. Matter of fact it won't even have internet connection at that point since the phone is not activated and won't connect via cellular.

Not sure of the new Bluetooth based FM reporting though.

To find lost devices, it is recommended to contact the local administration and/or law enforcement first. the Find My feature is meant to find "lost" devices, not stolen ones.

Just to clarify, this device is indeed lost. And what algorithm makes the device DFU wipe if I may ask so?

@np_f1_2021 it’s not algorithm, it’s manually initiated on device, it overrides all software limits and force wipes the device locally.

The point is to override any potential software bugs and force it to reset as new, by definition this removes any user session keys on the device, removing the abilities for it to be tracked.

What remains is the activation lock set on the Apple server. The particular hardware identity is recorded on Apple side which mandates the original owner to remove it from their Find My before Apple will allow the device to be activated again. In this way the tracking is not possible to protect unknowing victims privacy that bought stolen devices, while still discouraging device theft by making sure stolen devices are as good as bricks.
