Swop logic board vs swop components (early 2011 / mid 2012)?

Hi,

I have a mostly working mid 2012 13" i5 - keyboard and screen are cracked. I also have a early 2011 13” i5 that's in great condition but with a blown logic board.

Is it better to swop the 2012 logic board into the 2011, or to swap out the screen and keyboard into the 2012? I'm not sure if all the 2011 components like ports, WiFi etc will be compatible with the newer Logic board?

The main reason for doing it this way is that the case / battery etc of the 2011 are way better than the 2012 although it does seem a little back to front!

Hi

Iv had a look at part compatibility and from what I have seen the 2011 and 2012 13inch unibody MacBook Pros use the same Parts so you should be able to swap your logic board over into the better laptop!

along side the other parts too

hopefully this answers your question

if you need any more help just ask

Thanks:-)

Thanks for this. I was wondering though if for EG the USB ports would cause as issue as they're USB2 on the 2011 but USB3 on the 2012?. Am also wondering if an incompatibility could damage the logic board or would it just not work?

@southafricanrob

The USB port won’t be a problem as they are parts of the logicboard

A incompatibility could damage the logicboard but as I said I had a look at replacement parts and they are compatible with both the 2011 and 2012 so there shouldn’t be any compatibility issues:-)

@hellomacos thanks, I didn't realise they were part of the board, that's great. They specific versions are from differt identifiers. One is MacBookPro9,2 and the older is MacBookPro8,1. Would this need any kind of re install of OS or resetting anything as I'm using the same hard drive from the newer MacBook?

@southafricanrob

As far as I know if there’s macOS on a hard drive you can just put it into another machine with no issues:-)

@southafricanrob - you will face one small hiccup as the 2011 LVDS cable is slightly wider than the 2012 socket on the logic board. You'll need to take a nail file and carefully grid the edge down following this

Otherwise there are no issues using a 2012 logic board in a 2011 case (keyboard & trackpad) and display.

Thanks, I've had a really close look and can't seem to get the LVDS connector in at all, it's seems to be higher on the edges. Not sure how to post a pic in the comments but it looks like the same pins although can't get it in.

@southafricanrob - Just follow this guide to take the boards out to swap over MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Logic Board Replacement

As long as you also swap out the drives as well you should be fine. You may encounter issues with the HD SATA cable as they are fragile and often fail Your Hard Drive Cable Is A Ticking Time Bomb and in the process many people also damage the cable so you may want to replace it MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable and here's the guide MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Mid 2012 Hard Drive Cable Replacement
