ONE speck of dust under the top screen.

I just got a Zelda Limited Edition Nintendo 3DS for Christmas. The first one I got had 5 dead pixels on the top screen and one on the bottom. I called every Gamestop on the 26th and one store had one left and exchanged for me. This one is perfect aside from one speck of dust on the top screen right in the middle. It wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't in the middle. I see it all the time now. I know it's dust because I can see it when the system is turned off.

My dilemma is: I can't exchange again because no Gamestop has them and it's almost embarrassing to be OCD about a dust speck but I want this Limited Edition to be perfect. I also don't want to send it to Nintendo in fear that it comes back worse than it was or gets scratched, takes forever to get returned, etc.

Now, I am pretty tech savvy and am tossing around the idea of prying the top screen up a bit with a plastic wedge stick and using a can of air and hoping it can reach the screen and push the dust elsewhere but I'm afraid if I lift the screen that it won't go back down to how it is factory sealed.

Has anyone out there had a similar issue with an at home fix? Do I have to take apart the whole 3DS or can I just heat the top screen, pry off a bit, use an air can, and push it back down in place?

Unfortunately I have the SAME problem with my Zelda 3DS. Sent it in, waiting on to see the results.

Let me know how it goes!!!

I sent mine in because of dut under the screen & it will be back Tomorrow!

Did it come back fixed? Was everything else ok? I'm still debating on sending mine out...

I sent mine in to Nintendo and when it came back it STILL HAD THE DUST SPECK! It really makes me mad. They replaced the screen cover but didn't even bother to remove the dust!

You are much better off sending it to Nintendo for repair/replacement. That is what I advise you to do.

If you are going to insist on removing it yourself you will not get by with a simple job. When doing that job if you are not careful you will end up with more dust specs. Click here for the Upper LCD replacement guide. After you have removed the LCD you will be able to use the canned air. Good luck.

Please think about your concerns and my recommendation. 1) One of your concerns is Nintendo scratching your system. Attempting to pry up the screen lens risks scratching and nicking both the system, the LCD and the screen lens. 2) You want your system to be perfect. If you pry up the screen lens, even with the aid of heat, your screen lens most likely won't adhere properly when put back into place. You may have problems keeping it in place for the rest of your ownership. 3) Taking one of these apart voids your warranty and risks causing more damage to the system.

I wish I could just tap it against my leg a couple times and the speck would just fall to the side...I'm NOT going to open it myself and am just going to try and ignore it. When I really get into the game I forget it's there...it's during idle moments my eyes always seem to find/stare at it. Appreciate the great comment back, though!!!

I don't know if this will help but I'll just say this. I have a few 3DS's (haha) but it bugs me a lot with the dust getting in the groove at the top of the bezel... if that is what your problem is, then it generally works to take a normal piece of paper and slide it through the groove and get the dust up and out... my red 3DS however has some sticky dust (weird but maybe from the sleeve it came in) and the paper doesn't work to get that out...

Hi, I know this is late, but let me share what just worked for me (in case you still need an answer, or for you fellow Googlers). Note: this may or may not work for you. In my case, I had a noticeable speck of dust at 8 o'clock on the top screen.

What I did is this: I closed the 3DS and hit the left side against my palm gently but firmly about 5 times. That provided enough impulse to knock the speck out of sight. This is quick and easy, so try it before doing anything drastic. If it works, yay! If not, as you were.

Peace
