Display Adapter converter to HDMI no audio output on TV

Hi folks,

Sometime back, we bought a cheap refurbished mini PC off eBay to stream online video onto a Linsar 55" TV.

It came with a display adapter, and to get the signal to the HDMI input of the TV, I got a converter off eBay.

It was working just fine until we moved house.

Now, when I set up the PC with the TV, everything is the same, but there is no audio output although the HDMI display is fine on the TV.

Here are the details of the PC in case you're interested:

One thing I forgot to mention is that the DP to HDMI converter got damaged while still connected to the PC due to an impact, and I did have to change the converter. But there seems to be no hardware problem as such that I can tell, since the display comes on just fine on the TV.

There just isn't any audio. As I mentioned, it was working fine before we moved. Windows 10 did do some updates recently, but I'm unable to see any rollback options for those. I'm not sure if this would have anything to do with things necessarily. I also tried to update the display drivers, but no change.

I've checked the Control Panel for audio devices that would be related to the Display and there's nothing except the Realtek audio out. So, I'm more inclined to think there is a software issue - unless there's something I'm not aware of.

I've tried looking online for solutions but so far nothing has worked.

Any suggestions? Thanks again.

Hi @audiocurry,

Just verifying that the TV audio is OK when using other devices connected to it via HDMI e.g. dvd player etc?

@cyberwolfew

You could be right: maybe the converter doesn't support audio.

Actually, HDMI and DP both support audio.

Besides, as I mentioned in my post, the audio was working perfectly fine earlier via the DP output converted to HDMI.

@jayeff

I checked it out with a laptop HDMI output, and the audio works fine from HDMI to HDMI.

@cyberwolfew OK, I just checked: the new replacement converter I bought was exactly the same as the one that got damaged and needed replacement.

So, it should have worked - unless the unit that was sent has something wrong with it - but otherwise, it should technically work fine.

@audiocurry

This may be of interest to you.

Also not sure whether you did this or not but I always thought it inadvisable to "hot swap" HDMI and/or DP cables i.e. unplug/plug these cables/adapters/converters when either device i.e. host device and attached device is powered on due to the potential to cause problems. Better to have both devices turned off, connect the cables etc and then turn them on.

I know that it can cause problems with HDCP if you hot swap HDMI cables to use different ports/devices etc as the signals may be missed and the only way to get it to work is to start again with the power off and then turn them on again

This problem was solved. It was the new adapter that I had ordered. It didn't work for audio.

I ordered another one and it worked fine. So that was a learning experience for me.
