Elliott Newman did you make sure that the sd/cf adapter is compatible? The 5th is a bit finicky about that. Some work, some don't.

it was the cheapest components!

CF - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303921125330

SD/CF- https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B019...

Now visible again on finder, however after I hit restore same again, just a black circle and nothing happening

@Elliott Newman

Also did you try it with the original HDD?

Thanks:-)

Hi Elliott,

I have a slightly older model than you, so the adapter I got that works great isn't the same as yours; you've got the one that takes a zif cable, while mine plugs in directly.

However, I'd like to point out that I was ultimately successful in using that same frankenstein setup: IDE->CF + CF->SD + SD->TF. The only issue I found was that a pair of jumper pins stuck up too high and was contacting the metal lid and interfering with the operation. I just bent those pins 90 degrees flat and everything came up roses once they weren't shorting any more.

I'd suggest checking out iPod forums and research into others who've done the same mod and were successful. Find out what IDE->CF adapter they used and go get that one. Otherwise, just try buying another one from a different supplier and manufacturer; in general these things work but sometimes you do get one that doesn't for whatever reason; incompatibility, cheaply made, broken, etc.

Ultimately I found it to be worth it; I went from a 20 Gb iPod to a 128 Gb pretty cheaply, and given that the TF/microSD card takes way less power than a physical hard drive, your battery life should go through the roof. I haven't really tested mine because I use it on a mini boom box with constant power, but that's what I would expect.

Oh yeah, it's a lot lighter now too.

@dadibrokeit the iPod Video needs a Zif==>CF/SD card reader. Most successful is a product from iFlash (Tarkan). Also make sure that you have the right cable. Toshiba and Hitachi use different cables. So your card reader will have to have a cable that is consistent with your previous HDD.
