Trying to find out if I could repair this board or not?

This MSI Katana gf66 laptop recently died, took it to repair shop and was told vrm died and the manufacturer no longer made replacement parts for it, is it repairable or can vrm damage be more trouble than its worth? Picture included shows a blown inductor i think where the problem is.

Ethan Janis, Yikes, that is pretty bad damage. The question is: How deep is the damage?
I'd start by using some >99% isopropyl alcohol and gently, but firmly use a soft brush (preferably an ESD safe brush) but a toothbrush is acceptable. Then go over the damaged parts and outside, as that will give a better view of the damage.

If the damage goes down through the PCB layers, then I'd say it's a no-go, unfortunately.

I cleaned it up as best i could and from what i can tell it seems it burned the first layer or so, kinda hard to describe it

Ethna Janis use your soldering iron, desoldering braid and plenty of flux and go over the area. See if you can remove the blob (carefully) by desoldering.

The issues are:

are other traces on multilayers damaged?

what components failed to burn L9?

The problem is, you don't have a schematic to determine the answer to those issues. Simply replacing L9 probably won't solve the problem as inductors do not burn up without help from another component. The transistor to the right may be the problem if L9 is somehow connected to it and you can meter that out. However, another component may have cause that transistors demise, maybe even the CPU as the VRM is what regulates the CPU voltage. Other than that, the MB is probably junk.

gotcha, was just looking into it to see what i could do, thanks
